Published 30 yrs ago & as much or more of a book for our times: the tortilla curtain by @tcboyle.com — the well-off wall themselves in, from adaptable people & wildlife, but ultimately can’t keep out wildfires etc. Here’s excerpt I liked. And yeah, they be paving the border road here now. #ecocrime

Impressive bilingual meeting in Polish and in German organized by #Rewilding Oder Delta on the topic of #wolves and our interactions with them including mitigation of conflicts through #transboundary knowledge exchange. @rewildingeurope.bsky.social @mripas.bsky.social

#Poland also appears to include minefields in its "East Shield" plan and I hope this is reconsidered. Along more than half of the 418-km Polish-Belarusian border are #Natura2000 sites.

More roadkill, around the village. Please slow down for wildlife.

Look out for #wildlife which may be distracted at this time of year. Several recent victims of #roadkill: hedgehogs (numerous!), white stork, gray partridge (when we stopped at this carcass, its partner was calling nearby). #spring

A letter urging #NationalGeographic Board of Trustees to push back against the dismantling of U.S. science-based agencies. "Science and exploration are our foundation" too. #SaveScience

They don't. Border barriers are either exempted from EIAs (see: conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....) or skirt them. In the case of Poland, alternative options were not sought nor were connectivity and other attributes considered (p. 28 of UNESCO report: whc.unesco.org/en/documents...)

We recently came across 2 old sand pit sites near our transect areas in Białowieża Forest. These large sand pits appear to be well frequented by wildlife especially ungulates whose tracks could be found all around as well as on trails leading into the pits. Is it for sand baths or consumption?

The tree cutting is devastating. I was there, along the #BugRiver, on 25.11 heading southward toward the triborder area. Large old #trees that should be conserved for #biodiversity, cooling, all other "services" they provide were being removed. Short-sighted, yet again in name of "national security"
