I enjoyed dipping in and out of this, and it was fun to see that even in rock 'n roll, collaboration most often looks like 'this is the one that we all hated the least' 😂🤘

In Feb, I'll be at GenreCon! I'll be a 'Shreader' again (an editor! Editing! Live! Shockingly more interesting than it sounds!). AND if you want to ask about your work, career, options, OR if you want me to edit without the crowd, you can book a one-on-one. Info: www.genrecon.com.au/2025-opportu...

Last but absolutely not least, this life-changing book You are More Than What You Eat by @dremmabeckett.bsky.social. Funny, readable, a science-informed-but-not-an-asshole-about-it antidote to diets & food science & misinformation around bodies and the way we feed them. I *love* this book.

Caveat: I published this. Counter-caveat: that means I had to love it enough to live and breathe it for months and oooooh did I. A sapphic retelling of Andersen's The Nightingale by CA Wright that is lyrical and beautiful and swoony.

The beautiful Love Unleashed by Melanie Saward skews a little women's fiction than strictly romance, but is all the richer, funnier, and fish-out-of-watery-er for it (don't worry it 100% has a happy ending). A romance for readers looking for something more or a novel to introduce new readers with.

I read That Time I got Drunk and Saved a Demon by @kimberlylemming.bsky.social on a plane and I never read on planes, it is too disruptive and I can't concentrate. That was not a problem for this truly delightful, charming, funny, pacy, snarky, sexy novel.

I was absolutely bulled into reading Only a Monster by @vanessalen.bsky.social and I can only thank my colleague profusely for the violence. I devoured this book and its sequel over a weekend (during which I neglected everything else in my life. Sorry not sorry)

This is quite a sentimental choice; my oldest child is too old to read with anymore, but she was unwell earlier this year, and we read this together on the couch. Pacy, often very funny, filled with history and magic and adventure, we both loved Liar's Test by Ambelin Kwaymullina

My sister and I share a common reading preference: we *love* procedurals and we are very over psychological thrillers. Please bring back crime novels about solving crimes! Bone Lands by Pip Fioretti is just that, but with a historical, rural setting that adds intrigue and nuance. I was engrossed.

oh my GOD did I love The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. This year, I challenged myself to shop off my bookshelves; this was my first pick. TILOALR is so immersive, creative, thoughtful; a masterclass in time-jumps and building plot through character. Faust for the 21stC. I loved it.

Mrs Nash's Ashes by @sarahadlerwrites.com kind of caught me by surprise. I grabbed it as part of a sale and stumbled across it a bit later and then it completely blew me away. It's sweet and funny and so moving and I immediately added Adler to my auto-read list. Just a near-perfect novel

Speaking of thrusting books at people, my local bookstore The Leaf thrust Cold by Drew Hayden Taylor at me, and they were so right. I really needed this horror/humour/mystery/procedural, and I especially loved reading my way back into Canada when I was feeling far from home

I had what euphemistically could be defined as a very challenging year. The hardest part was not being able to find solace in reading. I really needed a book to help me find joy and sanity again. This is not a book about Benedict Cumberbatch by @tabithacarvan.bsky.social did that

When I say that I *fucking love* the Singing Hills Cycle by @nghivo.bsky.social I want you to understand that I *fucking love* these books. My fave books of the year for years, saved me during the pandemic, I have thrust them at everyone I know, AND they made my 'best books of the 21st century' list

When I say I *fucking loved* Whalefall by @danielkraus.com I want you to understand that I *fucking loved* this book. The best successor to Michael Crichton in contemporary science fiction that is just out-there-enough and just-believable-enough to take you on an unforgettable ride.
