Currently reading. Not my usual fare, but I'm enjoying it at the recommendation of a friend. Wry humor, interesting characters, smart, intriguing plot, nicely paced. I'm hooked and will probably read more by Chris Pavone.

There are rooms that know you, rooms you know & can name, rooms that rise & stutter into view if you stare long enough. Rooms where nothing happened but in your head, where the world went on apart from you, you trying to rise to it. Rooms with walls of white blocks, one window, the only sound the bang bang banging of the headboard against the wall, your bed still. The room where the bed fell on you, the room where the hand going down was not your own, the groping tongue the proof. The room you talked your way out of, four men of monosyllables, thick arms & necks flushed pink, closing in, emptying the air between. The room where you were walked in on, the room where you were the walker, both times the last time in that room. The room with no door, a woman across the threshold, you crawling to her, over her to the bathroom to press your cheek against the white, your name an indictment among the stalls. The room the sun never touched, the sound of cars dropping you to sleep, your pupils large & hungry for light. Brian Henry

A Word on Statistics by WISŁAWA SZYMBORSKA (translated from the Polish by Joanna Trzeciak) Out of every hundred people, those who always know better: fifty-two. Unsure of every step: almost all the rest. Ready to help, if it doesn't take long: forty-nine. Always good, because they cannot be otherwise: four-well, maybe five. Able to admire without envy: eighteen. Led to error by youth (which passes): sixty, plus or minus. Those not to be messed with: four-and-forty. Living in constant fear of someone or something: seventy-seven. Capable of happiness: twenty-some-odd at most. Harmless alone, turning savage in crowds: more than half, for sure. Cruel when forced by circumstances: it's better not to know, not even approximately. Wise in hindsight: not many more than wise in foresight. Getting nothing out of life except thing thirty (though I would like to be wrong). Balled up in pain and without a flashlight in the dark: eighty-three, sooner or later. Those who are just: quite a few, thirty-five. But if it takes effort to understand: three. Worthy of empathy: ninety-nine. Mortal: one hundred out of one hundred-a figure that has never varied yet.

Loved it. Many aspects struck a personal chord. My weird Catholic childhood in a tiny, small-minded town, my mom's involvement w/Charismatics, her mental health struggles, how it all negatively affected me...was there throughout the book. It was quiet, but powerful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #BookerPrizeShortlist

We have to stop treating “self-love” as a prerequisite for decent treatment. You're allowed to want love while still learning how to love yourself. You're allowed to expect kindness even while growing. Being insecure or imperfect doesn't mean you invited pain. @ZOËCROOKTHERAPY When we frame every heartbreak as a mirror of your inner wounds, we inch dangerously close to victim-blaming. It's one thing to self-reflect. It's another to take on blame that was never yours to carry. @ZOËCROOKTHERAPY Sometimes the lesson isn't “I need to love myself more.” Sometimes it's simply: “They shouldn't have treated me like that." So what's the most self-loving thing you can do? Learn to hold both truths: I'm still learning how to love myself—and I STILL deserved better.

I tell you, I like the way you speak. You've got a tongue worth paying attention to. I tell you, I want to be friends. I want to be friends who think about tearing each other open, mad and wet and sorry with nostalgia for a life we didn't live together. I'm doing fine, as in, my body takes up space and hardly anyone notices I'm a yawn away from dissolving. Pity makes a soul porous and people like us whistle when the wind blows. We remember being young together all that trust in the goodness of our own lives, where did it go? Maybe I'll find it by sucking on your shoulders. I want you unreasonably.
