This exactly! If you can’t put together a cogent rationale that the majority of people can accept, your position is indefensible. Come back with another proposal. It’s that simple. All this couching is what got us in this mess. Elected officials should be honest brokers. Ethics matter.

I’m reading ‘Civil Resistance’ by Erica Chenoweth & non-violent resistance is actually successful more often than violent resistance. Non-violent resistance takes being measured and thoughtful. It’s scary not to react, but it’s vital. I agree that we need to be imaginative, but we must be cautious.

Unfortunately, we can’t just also throw out norms and rules. They’re the things we’re trying to protect, the things that keep our society from devolving into violence. Violence is the enemy and the right wants it badly. We cannot hand it to them or we’re lost.
