I'm thrilled to share my first published op-ed in The Conversation! In this piece, I draw on my fieldwork in Nigeria to demonstrate how cutting HIV aid undermines both US interests and two decades of life-saving progress. Thank you for sharing!

theconversation.com/cutting-hiv-...
Cutting HIV aid means undercutting US foreign and economic interests − Nigeria shows the human costs
Withdrawing or reducing aid has immediate and often fatal effects − not only for the countries receiving aid but for people around the globe.

Now they have come for the NEH, and with it my beloved Humanities Tennessee and Chapter 16, where I spent 10 years of my professional life. The fact that it was inevitable in this Orwellian year of 2025 doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/o...
Opinion | Why DOGE Slashed the National Endowment for the Humanities (Gift Article)
Eliminating federal funding for the humanities saves next to no money, but it will cost the American people something precious.

Any word on whether NEH’s the State and Impact of the Humanities program is going forward (proposals due in about a week)? Or are all 2025-2026 grants eliminated? The opportunity is located in the Office of Data and Evaluation (ODE). #NEH @nehgov.bsky.social @humanitiesall.bsky.social

I'm concerned about today's NYT story reporting that DOGE plans to gut the National Endowment for the Humanities. This isn't just devastating for researchers like me -- it impacts everyone, regardless of your political leaning.
URGENT: Save the NEH
I just took action to oppose the elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities! Join me and take action here.

Last week, @cobioethics.bsky.social brought the stories of Henrietta Lacks, artist Jeffrey Kent, and our Science in Suspension project to 150 Aurora STEM Middle School 6th graders. Go owls!

And “Science in Suspension” is up in the windows of the Fulginiti Pavilion at #CUAnschutz! I love how the sun cuts through the Petrie dishes—like stained glass. Today, students came to make art and discuss The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, as part of the One Book One Campus program.

Jeffrey Kent
HeLa No. 249, 2018

Here, Kent uncovers the complex patterns of cellular division. Each layer of paint suggests both scientific process & historical erasure. The abstracted forms speak to how HeLa cells, like Lacks’ story, resist containment-breaking boundaries both biological & social
