It took me 3.5 years to write this story. I interviewed survivors & listened to the dead via dozens of contemporary sources & academic articles. Finally, I took a trip to the institution’s cemetery with one of the survivors. It’s all that remains: a subdivision is built on top of the rest.

As Peoria bans sleeping in public, dozens of unhoused residents in Humboldt Park brace for the city to close their camp this Friday. Last week, a coalition of concerned homelessness service providers sent a letter to Ald Fuentes calling for this plan to either be revised or delayed.
