This piece is exceptional. Devastating, as all writing that accurately describes what is happening in our country must be. But an amazingly concise view of the institutions currently being dismantled as seen through the lens of the history of WW2 and its aftermath. Thank you ,HCR.

This hard-working community member’s crime didn't warrant being exiled to a country he hadn't seen since he was a kid. His wife and kids stayed here, so they lost their dad. If someone is a violent criminal, sure. But they will pick up people for small crimes too.

After that, all the Latino kids were worried their parents would be taken away. They didn't understand documented vs not, they just thought all Latino families were being targeted. Oh and this guy's crime that got him targeted? A single DUI from years earlier. (Cont.)

My kids were classmates with his sons all through elementary in the dual language program. The community tried to help him avoid deportation after his apt was raided by ICE in the middle of the night, but they sent him back to Ecuador after months in a lousiana detention center. (Cont.)
