This is the culmination of years of reading, thinking, and talking with @batjamesquita.bsky.social, Dirk Geeraerts, Lyle Ungar, Yeasle Lee, Èvelyne Dussault, and Simon Devylder. I’m so proud of the roadmap we’ve created, and excited to see where it takes us (all).

In our perspective in Communications Psychology, we use findings from psychology and linguistics to show how accessing attention, construal, and appraisal through language can open new vistas for the science of emotion.

Language doesn’t just tell you how someone is feeling; it reveals what they are attending to, the perspective they are adopting, how they are evaluating the situation. These processes – which we refer to as attention, construal, and appraisal – are how people make meaning of themselves in the world.
