In our perspective in Communications Psychology, we use findings from psychology and linguistics to show how accessing attention, construal, and appraisal through language can open new vistas for the science of emotion.

In our perspective in Communications Psychology, we use findings from psychology and linguistics to show how accessing attention, construal, and appraisal through language can open new vistas for the science of emotion.
Language doesn’t just tell you how someone is feeling; it reveals what they are attending to, the perspective they are adopting, how they are evaluating the situation. These processes – which we refer to as attention, construal, and appraisal – are how people make meaning of themselves in the world.
