Backed by changes coming out of TOP2025 revisions, we recommend 4 things.

Recommendation 1: Use the term registration to describe entering info in a register.

We find somewhat large differences in the estimated rate of preprinting depending on data source! The figure below focuses on PLOS One and PLOS Biology articles to ensure a comparable set of articles across data sources, but we think results generalize to other journals.

I think about this passage (Merton, 1942) a lot:

However recht-deutsch or hundred-per-cent American the final increment, some aliens are accessories before the fact of every new technical advance. The imperative of universalism is rooted deep in the impersonal character of science. However, the institution of science is but part of a larger social structure with which it is not always integrated. When the larger culture opposes universalism, the ethos of science is subjected to serious strain. Ethnocentrism is not compatible with universalism.

One that has been in my and many others’ crosshairs is the relationship between professional science and a peer-review process that is the jury and judge for valuable products. Ask any editor at a journal: Finding reviewers to evaluate manuscripts is akin to pulling teeth. This problem will become a thousand times worse. No one will have time to read your work, rerun your computer scripts, or pore over your methods. There were never great incentives to do so in the first place (service to the great scientific community has always been a minor part of our promotion dossiers), and now it isn’t worth our effort at all, as we all scramble to chase the same shrunken pool of available funding, in the name of reaching professional benchmarks set in a world that no longer exists.

Another consideration - restrictive licenses don't protect you from AI reuse, and instead they impede reuse that you likely want (e.g., translations).

CC-BY allows your preprint to most broadly read and reused. Creative Commons (and ASAPbio) are recommending this license for your preprints. A key point:
