Somewhat related: my husband had a nosebleed yesterday and he was not at all keen on my newly-gleaned-but-very-old suggestion that I place a cold key on the back of his neck.

I have acquired this fascinating little booklet from 1935, filled with all manner of things that were considered ‘general information’ at the time of publication.

My 34th read of the year was Birding by @regretteruane.bsky.social. I thought it was atmospheric and gorgeous and thought-provoking. A real gem of a book, packed with many-layered relationships and things left unsaid.

My 31st book of the year was A Sign of Her Own by Sarah Marsh, and it really blew me away. A beautifully constructed novel that explores part of the history of the deaf community, and how it intersects with Alexander Graham Bell and the invention of the telephone. Highly recommended!

In world’s-slowest-doll’s-house-project news, this weekend I have finished painting the railings and have attached them to the pavement.

28th book of the year! I’ve read some wonderful books in 2025 so far, but The Eights by @joannamillerauthor.bsky.social has definitely been one of my favourites. Such a gorgeously detailed portrait of four female students at Oxford in 1920. Highly recommended!

My 26th book of the year was the delightful The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. This was an engrossing read with such a wonderful premise. I’m hoping it makes the Women’s Prize shortlist tomorrow…

Last year, I wrote the very first lines of a new novel project just as the daffodils were coming into bloom. A year later, the daffodils are back, and I’m half way through a third draft of that same project. Feels like great progress.

I had a birthday this week and celebrated with flowers, cake, lovely friends, and painting pottery in my kitchen.

It’s Friday, the sun is shining and I’m about to edit a scene about a psychical researcher visiting a young woman who claims to be being bothered by a poltergeist.

My 19th book of 2025 was the EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD ‘The Artist’ by Lucy Steeds. It’s set over the summer of 1920 in the home of a reclusive French artist. Gorgeously constructed & beautifully written.

There is an awful lot to worry about in the world at the moment, but today I’m trying to focus on the good. So, the sun is shining, I’m wearing my favourite t-shirt and my friend came over with fondant fancies. (Oh, and the writing is going well, too!)

Knitting progress! I’m hoping to actually finish knitting the sleeves before the end of sweater weather.

My 12th book of 2025 was ‘Reputation’ by Lex Croucher. This was such a fun read with a really quirky voice. I loved Croucher’s updated take on Regency fiction.

I was feeling pretty smug about having now made twenty-one tiny books. But then I put them on the bookshelf in my doll’s house and, well. Let’s just say I have a lot more tiny books still to make.

I had my first non-medical outing of 2025 this morning! There was blue sky and birdsong and bare trees and crocuses and snowdrops and a wide open space. (And, of course, children laughing and den-finding and dogs running about.)

10th book of 2025! I just loved ‘The Instrumentalist’ by Harriet Constable. Such a vivid portrait of a talented violinist in 18th century Venice. Beautiful prose, fascinating story, and all the more striking for being based on reality.

We sowed these coleus seeds at the start of the year & tucked them up in a plastic bag to do their thing. I took a peek in the bag today & found all these shoots! Perhaps there’s a metaphor here about germination time & hidden progress, but for now I’m just going to enjoy the lovely new greenness.

8th book of the year! ‘Real Life’ by Brandon Taylor. One of those stories that seems quite contained at first glance (a small group of friends, a single weekend) but actually has a great deal to say. I expect it will stay with me for a long time.

This snowman has officially been in residence in our garden for an entire week. I’ve got quite used to his company, so might have a bit of a Raymond Briggs moment when he’s finally gone.

My 4th book of 2025 is ‘Tilly and the Map of Stories’ from the Pages & Co series by Anna James. I read this with my 10yo and my 8yo and we all loved it! The cameo appearances from Shakespeare, Fitzgerald and Austen were particularly joyful: I love that this series never talks down to children.

Quiet afternoon here, so I’m preparing to begin a new novel draft by rereading my research notes from last year. I think it will be interesting to see which research tidbits made it into the previous draft, and which have (thus far!) slipped through the cracks.

2025 seems like a great time to start a book thread. I’m not going to add everything I read, just books I’ve really enjoyed.

My first read of 2025 has got things off to a great start: Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors. I liked all of it, though I absolutely would’ve read it for Bonnie & Pavel alone!

Speaking of the books I’ve read this year, here are my twelve absolute favourites. Some were released in hardback or paperback this year, some very much were not! Predictably, most of them are historical novels, but there are a couple of wildcards in there, too.
