We were witnesses today. We were witnesses of the sin of a nation that is being swept into fascism at an alarming rate. We were witnesses of a little family’s life changed forever. And we were witnesses of the space between what is legal and what is right.

We were witnesses today. We were witnesses of the sin of a nation that is being swept into fascism at an alarming rate. We were witnesses of a little family’s life changed forever. And we were witnesses of the space between what is legal and what is right.
That this little family did not get taken without knowing that there were people who cared for them, there were people who saw them, there were people who bore witness to the wrong inflicted upon them.

That while they were swept down the hallway the young adult volunteers from the Democratic Socialist party were standing toe to toe with agents and holding them accountable to the humanity before them.

The seven-year-old looked up to me and smiled and shook Roro, the three-year-old had a mom at her back and a mom at her front and two more moms flanking her – another pastor and a member of our synod staff.

The small miracle was only this – that while this large, condescending and angry man hurled insults at the volunteers and bullied this young woman – the tiny space of my body in front of the little girls by not turning around created a bubble.
