My grandfather loved untangling mill end skeins for us.
Most comparisons focus on drape of the resulting fabric or yardage needed for equivalent projects. You could use extra needles, short rows and stacked stitches to get wild with knitting. Or you could do tunisian crochet where you have a hook full of live stitches until you finish your return row :)
