I think of a short story by Graham Greene in 1954 called “The Destructors.” There is a synopsis in Wikipedia if you google it. The protagonist is Trevor AKA “T” who leads a cruel gang which destructs rather than destroys a house owned by an elderly man. It’s diabolical. Truly chilling
