For once, celiac is my friend. Barilla makes the most acceptable widely-available GF pasta. So at least that's safe at the moment.

The USIA World Survey series included the open-ended most important problem question in hundreds of surveys around the world over decades. Here are the Pakistan results from World Survey 1, 1963

Another early multi-country research project was the 1951 BASR Columbia radio survey in the Middle East: Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt. There are a lot of questions about radio, but other stuff as well, including this pair of questions that must have given respondents cognitive whiplash

The Hopes and Fears surveys were Hadley Cantril's work, and he did similar surveys in the early 60s in multiple countries, including Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. These use the Self Striving ladder scale to measure satisfaction with personal life and the country.

Moving south, I wrote up an overview of African data at Roper, including the earliest African polls in the collection. Among the most interesting is a pair of Nigerian surveys: the general public and legislators on Hopes and Fears for the country. ropercenter.cornell.edu/blog/african...

Sticking with the northern realms, there are not many early polls in Iceland. But Norsk Gallup did a long survey on international relations and related topics. Also 1956. Here's some views on capitalism, socialism, and communism

First up: A pair of surveys on neutralism conducted by Norsk Gallup in Denmark and Norway in 1956 by USIA. Danish responses below to a question that seems quite relevant this week

The overall tone was interesting too, because it was 100% "what is the bare minimum that you need to do to make money here"? ORC was clearly assuming (rightfully, I'm sure) that execs had to date given zero thought to this, In addition to hiring policy changes, there were marketing considerations

A 1961 ORC survey of Black Americans, white executives and Black leaders focused on boycotts, done to advise white execs on how to make money from the Black market. The quotes from Black leaders are interesting, citing 4 factors of boycott strength: economic, moral, ideological, and pragmatic

I don't do it now, but it was helpful for me for a while to frame my expectations around serving sizes and total calories. Honestly, I hate tracking anything. Ever.

It was! I then did a lot of calorie counting and a lot of exercise and lost 55 pounds, which I've kept off for 5 years (despite menopause). I found cardio makes me hungry, but strength training doesn't seem to affect my appetite; I do drop pounds as well as inches. But everyone's body is different.

When I finally went on effective anti-depressants, my constant carb cravings all but disappeared. I still liked sugar, but I didn’t feel in thrall to it. Like a switch had been turned off.
