What triumph? The triumph of two murderous war criminals, Bibi and Trump? These genocidal tyrants must be brought to justice. Shame, shame on Time--but what do we expect?

Nice story today, Sam, about disaster gentrification. Good to see you and that important article quoted. Way to go

So much for building factories in the US. Why would overseas workers want to subject themselves to that kind of treatment? The whole "bring jobs back" thing is a farce anyway.

Better late than never.

This policy is an outrage. Such cruelty. If it is allowed to stand, people will die. The idea that services could be denied to those most in need in a disaster is anathema to everything this country stands for--or used to. This must be fought in the courts, and service providers must resist.
August 28, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Of course they are punishing staffers who speak the truth. Most accounts I have read do not mention that the administration has broken the law--specifically the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act. Nobody seems to care; lawlessness is now the norm government-wide.

So sad...one more experienced person leaving FEMA's ranks and adding to the brain drain. Waiting 72 hours to approve USAR mobilization is nothing short of criminal.
July 22, 2025 at 2:16 PM
This is a disgrace! But also to be expected from a FEMA director with no--absolutely no--emergency management experience of any kind. The delay in mobilizing federal resources to Texas is absolutely unconscionable. Does Noem have any idea of her role and FEMA's role in a disaster of this magnitude?
July 10, 2025 at 10:43 PM
Yes, mission accomplished! But not so fast: material and equipment was moved from Fordow; other nations are now offering to provide Iran with nukes; and there's that tiny matter of the Straight of Hormuz. What could go wrong?
June 23, 2025 at 3:51 PM
This article is 100% spot on, highlighting what could go badly wrong under the current regime, which seeks to devolve disaster management to states--which won't work--and eliminate FEMA. Imagine being a FEMA employee during hurricane season, knowing Trump wants you fired.
June 23, 2025 at 3:38 PM
I would say I find this shocking, but nothing shocks me anymore. It does make me sick though.
June 11, 2025 at 8:55 PM
Yet another important government institution heading for the chopping block. What Trump is saying is that he wants to dole out disaster relief like patronage. I have studied hazards and disasters as a career, and I can guarantee that any plan of that nature will backfire horribly.
June 11, 2025 at 8:41 PM
All the more reason to come out in large numbers nationwide to exercise our First Amendment right to protest!
June 10, 2025 at 6:57 PM
Right on Malcolm! You know whereof you speak!
June 9, 2025 at 11:09 PM
This is so uncalled for that it boggles the mind. There are 88 cities in Los Angeles County. Many have their own police forces, while the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement protections to others. Absolutely no need for NatGuard or Marines in this situation. Resist!
June 9, 2025 at 11:08 PM
Yes, correct, fascism is here, with marines being sent to Los Angeles for no actual reason other than to intimidate (largely) peaceful demonstrators. As if there were not a sufficient number of law enforcement personnel in the county and region to control lawful assemblies.
June 9, 2025 at 10:05 PM
Thank you so much! I'm so honored!
June 9, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Cry me a river a-hole. What a weird rant. You're not there for tea an crumpets? No, you are there to destroy our rule of law and terrorize our public servants. History will judge.
May 29, 2025 at 8:27 PM
I hope everyone recognizes that states simply cannot take up the slack in terms of disaster mitigation, response, and recovery. It will not happen. And with FEMA hampered by firings and MAGA-related upheavals, the country is in for a perilous summer disaster season.
May 26, 2025 at 2:50 PM
This is just hilarious! The Secretary of Homeland Security--Homeland Security!--who is protected by the Secret Service, is robbed while dining at a restaurant! This is the person/agency charged with protecting our nation from terrorism and other threats, and can't even foil a lone robber! Yikes!
April 21, 2025 at 8:47 PM
The federal employees I know--and I know a lot of them--are folks with advanced degrees and hard-working scientists who are incredibly good at what they do. Has (f)Elon ever met a federal civil servant, do you think?
April 13, 2025 at 10:37 PM
This is madness, pure and simple. The aim appears to be to privatize the services NOAA provides, gut climate research, and eliminate opportunities for new cohorts of weather & climate researchers. "Disastrous" is the right word.
April 11, 2025 at 5:27 PM
Only people power will stop the fascist takeover. The cowards bowing down to fascism should remember: History will judge.
April 2, 2025 at 2:40 PM
For shame. History will judge.

From a sociologist, thanks so much for this. And any group can be "racialized," like my Irish ancestors.
