Is assisted dying a treatment? This question is not just interesting philosophically - it has important implications in terms of clinical practice and law.

Just out - letter in @JAMAInternalMed led by @joannamdavies.bsky.social

“Understanding the risks that MAiD [assisted dying] may pose to individuals living in vulnerable situations … should be a priority.”

This letter, in today’s Times, stopped me in my tracks.

The assisted dying Bill will affect all of society, in ways that have barely been considered.

Indeed, it already is…

Strong statement from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. “We cannot support the Terminally Ill Adults Bill as it stands”

Our letter in today’s @theguardian on the assisted dying Bill - with full list of signatories.

Last week, a group of lawyers, judges and academics described the proposed panel amendment as ‘sensible and practical’.

It may be ‘practical’. But is it safe?
March 16, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Letter in today’s @theguardian.com from me and 34 other health and care professionals on the assisted dying panels.

Unfortunately they have cut 33 signatories - including social workers, psychiatrists, geriatricians.

This must be corrected.

My letter in today’s Guardian on last weeks oral evidence sessions for the assisted dying bill - and how they left us with more questions than answers (including a big one)…
February 7, 2025 at 9:25 AM
Important letter in today’s Times. 24 leading psychiatrists say assisted dying will harm suicide prevention.

It was apparent last week that some committee members believe there’s a clear line between suicidality and a wish for hastened death. These psychiatrists disagree.

None of this would have been possible without the support of my fabulous team, and colleagues at the Cicely Saunders Institute and beyond.

2025 will be an interesting and important year for palliative care. Our job and my priority is to ensure high quality evidence informs policy and practice.

We’ve held events in Parliament and for the public, and used public opinion polling to highlight the need for improved palliative care.
December 31, 2024 at 2:06 PM
During late 2024 much of my focus was on assisted dying – collating evidence, radio, TV, podcast and print media interviews, and Parliamentary events. With several other palliative care doctors, I published a letter in the Times on the depiction in the debate of ordinary dying.
