I'm pretty sure there are tropes in every story ever told and in all mediums. Just check out tvtropes.org, the encyclopedia of modern character and plot tropes. Tropes are not stereotypes! They are narrative devices used by storytellers in every genre, though each have their favorites.

Check out Jennifer Crusie's work. She is a former academic turned romance novelist who has studied why romance novels came to be seen as "low brow" fiction. (Spoiler: it was the patriarchy. Male publishers liked the $$ these novels made but didn't want women authors to gain bargaining power).
