I did it! I made a zine! Free to download! One side is "how to plant" using all native Hawaiian plants and the other is a mini guided nature journal. Thanks @sarahmackattack.bsky.social for the inspiration! hawaiinaturejournal.org/planting-gui...

Made a map of the project area where I volunteer a few times a month, because when I say "Hamakua" everyone says, "where?" Our next upcoming nature journaling and malama event is on June 16, 4-7pm.

Another lovely evening at Hamakua yesterday, weeding the hillside to the sound of ae'o and alae ke'oke'o. The pohinahina cuttings are taking root and putting forth new leaves, always encouraging to see.

Marine debris sorting adventure yesterday! Met so many cool people doing science and cleaning up our beaches and educating others. Made these journal pages on site ✍️ #naturejournaling #marinedebris #volunteer

Look at how much the hillside I cleared of haole koa! j/k I only moved branches from a small section but I didn't injure myself or anyone else in the process so it's a win! Small note: the chainsaw part was done the past month. No one lets me use a chainsaw, and definitely not on a hillside.

Spent some time captivated by the tiny worlds in the hollows of a lava rock at the beach this morning. I hugged the pohaku goodbye because it is now my friend and I promised to come back to visit. Baby snails! Little tufts of algae! 😍 #hugarocktoday

From the book, "Winter: On the mainland, they say that water freezes and turns to ice. But here, in Hokkaido, we say that ice melts and turns to water. Everything begins with freezing. The trees slumber deeply amid the snow."

While in Furano, Hokkaido, Japan, I discovered the work of So Kuramoto. I have these postcards and a wonderful book of his art and poetry, and they really influenced my perspective of the trip. He is mainly known for his screenwriting and playwriting, and this art is from more recent years.

Back from our family ski trip to Japan! Some friends wanted to know more so I'll be doing a little zoom presentation in April about the experience. I want to do more zoom classes/group discussions in general, I'm thinking Monday mornings Hawaii time (which would be late afternoon on the east coast)?

Got down to the beach for sunrise. The lens flare appeared on my painting right where the sun actually rose! What luck!

Took time for a swim, a quick watercolor of moku manu, and little chat with friends about our crumbling democracy

It’s a flock of akekeke (Ruddy Turnstone) at Hamakua! No one else on the bird walk tonight was excited as I was. Apologizes for the terrible photo, maybe I’ll bring something other than my ancient tiny phone on one of these.

Question: Are Halimeda sp. called limu ekaha in Hawaiian? Anyone know? That’s what they’re labeled as in my field guide to coastal organisms but I can’t find a second reference anywhere.

Taught another workshop at the amazing Manoa Heritage Center. Only six participants this morning but it was lovely to dive deep into different ways of drawing and seeing the beauty of nature 💕

I take an online class about the flora and fauna of rural England and I look forward to it every week.

Pulled up weeds at the local wildlife refuge last night with good people and lemme tell you I needed that. I keep a journal of the work we do and it is not easy to balance that with volunteering but it always makes for good conversation and a moment to appreciate the beauty.

I’m obsessed with the wiliwili trees in our local nature reserve.

I started #naturejournaling in 2021. I've filled about 6 journals since then, and I'm about to finish another one before the end of the year. Since then, I've taught hundreds of people how to #naturejournal and taught teachers how to teach it. I've been to amazing places and met so many people.

I borrowed a friend's zoom lens for my ancient DSLR camera and I got this series of shots of an ae'o (Hawaiian stilt) being dramatic.

I made a #naturejournaling list for people to follow. What is nature journaling though? Basically: words, pictures, and numbers. Creativity and curiosity about nature. Below is an example of one of my pages from a recent afternoon spent at the marina with my family. #hawaii #naturejournal

I feel dumb. I know tree rings=age of tree but which rings do you count? Only the darkest? There’s so many rings though?! (Stump from our Xmas tree we got from a local farm this weekend)

Anyone had Amazon just... decide not to fulfill orders?? I self-published with Lulu in Aug. I just found out TODAY that all Amazon orders are being put on hold bc my cover doesn't meet specifications. Prints fine w/ other companies.

So it’s hard to share my recent nature journaling pages bc I’ve been moving quickly and focused on the experience/memory more than composition or end product. And however valuable work like this is to me, personally, I don’t know if it communicates well over social media.
