Also shout out to the book I just finished, It's Not A Cult by Joey Batey

Weird folk horror about fandom and mob mentality, by an author who is also a singer and actor (his band The Amazing Devils is one of my favourites)

Hello! Just started Moonstorm by Yoon Ha Lee, about learning to be a space mecha pilot and prove your devotion to the empire

Given what I know of the author I'm not expecting it to end up like that

It gets him regular jobs in panto though, here's this year's one

(I don't think Americans even have pantomimes? In UK it's ironically a bulwark against people demonising drag, they take their kids to it every year, the principal boy is a girl and the stepmum is a man)

He takes dance seriously and he's trying to make them better

End result is that he's the only judge whose opinion I really value, and he's the one who effectively controls whether anyone can get 40

Any person implicated in those files would have no claim to be anyone's favourite politician

I live here and I love what we could be, so I try to support and protect it

But it's so damn hard

I'm as white & English as anyone on this mongrel island (I believe one great great granddad was Spanish?) Great great-granddads enlisted in WW1, granddads in WW2.

Which means I pass the bullshit tests, but means I've got nowhere else I can move away from gammon and terfs

And fuck this shit already

Also all three of the Dramione fanfic repubs are in the top 16 romantasy apparently

I feel sure it's a sufficiently large and established genre to get away from this good girl / bad boy tedium

I bought it a while ago, but I actually read it because he was on a panel at Fantasycon and seemed like an interesting guy

Shout out to the book I just finished, Perilous Times by Thomas D Lee, reincarnated Arthurian legends fighting it out in a future Britain broken by climate change, corporate and state cleptocracy, and rampant xenophobia

Never seen a portrayal of Arthur that way before...

Hello!

Currently reading Love on the Tracks by Tamsen Parker, a refreshing contemporary romance between a female pro athlete and male popstar, where he loves her muscles etc

Ebooks! I bought 13 over the weekend but luckily they're not terribly heavy

Hello! Nice to meet you again at World Fantasy con

I'm rereading Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey, for the first time in probably 20 years

Holds up pretty well considering

Hello!

Just finished Sistah Samurai by Tatiana Obey, which starts as a gonzo genre mashup and ends as a powerful affirmation of survival

Just started Priest of the Gallows by Peter McLean, the third in the War for the Rose Throne low fantasy, with great characters and voice

Hello!

Struggling with reading focus lately so still on Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

But I've got to get a move on because book club is on Tuesday!

So good, especially book 2

I read these first a long time before Penric and Desdemona came out

If you haven't read the Vorkosigan books, please do! Start with Cordelia's Honour

Chaucer is the best, also the layers of irony and pastiche

But also Pearl I adore
October 13, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Exactly

And incoherent

I found that medievalists either loved Malory and Piers Plowman (clearly wrong) or Chaucer and the Pearl poet (clearly correct)
