Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Lucifer's Hammer. Even as a kid I knew there was something wrong about this book. And yet it contained passages like this.
On Earth there was plague. Three billion years after the planet's formation there came a virulent mutation, a form of life that used sunlight directly. The more efficient energy source gave the green mutant a hyperactive, murderous vigor; and as it spread forth to conquer the world, it poured out a flood of oxygen to poison the air. Raw oxygen seared the tissues of Earth's dominant life and left it as fertilizer for the mutant.

For some reason I just remembered this bit in Wally K. Daly's "The Ultimate Evil" novelisation which confused me then and confuses me now. What on Earth does the Doctor's line about "pongs" mean?!
The Doctor's interrogator is explaining the Interceptor which citizens are required to wear: "It filters out all evil, whether visual, oral, or mental; and allows us to be totally pure. A punishment is automatically administered by 'Central Computer' if self-generated evil in any form is allowed to persist in the mind of the wearer." The words escaped the Doctor's lips before he could stop them. "Obviously not much good on human 'pongs' if my presence is causing such a furore."

After thirty years it has suddenly occurred to me that Ace's slightly stiff stance, as she swings her sword down on the robot Ant, is probably supposed to echo the very famous scene of Nebamun hunting in the marshes.

Unravelling The Clockodiles sealed Earth with the Unshaped Lock. No-one could leave the planet. Rockets crashed. Who cared? Not many. Everyday life went on. Chris, a time traveller, could see the Lock's shining energy threads pulled taut across the Earth's surface, piercing streets, buildings, people. The Doctor? Trapped somewhere, at the centre of the weave. Chris was alone! What could he do? What had the Doctor said? 'Any tapestry can be unravelled, if you know which thread to pull.' Chris saw the golden thread running into his own heart. He swallowed. He grabbed hold of the thread and began to tug.

Memory In the incoherent jumble of the Doctor's memories, some stand out clearly, like photographs. He's standing on Primrose Hill, holding his mother's hand. The moon rises over London. He knows there's some secret as to why it looks so enormous, but not what it is. Not yet. 'Do you see the face of the Man in the Moon?' his mother asks. 'I see the Mare Imbrium, and the Mare Tranquillitatis -- oh! They're his eyes!' 'You asked me where your father was. Think of him as the Man in the Moon. Far away in the sky ... but he watches.'

'We'll never get away with this, sir.' The Unshaped Lock cannot be destroyed. Hence this jaunt to Florida. The huge hangar echoed. _Herschel_ was tall as a four-story building. They wore white coveralls to avoid contaminating the probe. The Doctor gently lifted its insulating golden blanket and slipped the Lock underneath. 'We _have_ got away with it. Off to the planet Uranus.' 'Why there?' 'Anywhere but here. Earth gets taken over all the time. Plus it's full of humans. Too much temptation.' Alarms blared. Nardole said, 'Ooo!' 'Relax.' The Doctor waggled the sonic screwdriver. 'I've already scrambled the security system.'

'I'm hoping their astrophotographical skills can locate the hidden Carfax homeworld.' Regina said, 'We're delighted to help, Doctor.' Concetta said, 'Let us have the photographic plates.' The four nuns began poring over them, precisely, patiently. Benny had nodded off when Emilia said, 'Here, Doctor! Your missing star!' 'That's it! A Dyson swarm, blocking the star's light. From the hot tub, Sam looked up at the Clockodile dubiously. It smiled, which didn't help. 'Doctor,' she muttered, 'I thought you said this lot were galactic conquerors.' 'Not every Clockodile fits the power-mad warrior stereotype, Sam.' The reptile protested, 'Millions of us moved from the homeworld to escape all that!' Sam flushed. 'Sorry,' she stammered, 'I should know better.' She sagged in the water as the Clockodile asymmetrically massaged her feet. 'Is that why you're called that? You've got a big hand and a little hand?' 'I'll explain later,' said the Doctor. 'For now, just relax.' The Clockodile winked.

The TARDIS translated for Mel. 'The Carfax are long dead, but their automatic robots have reached Earth.' He showed the cats an insectoid bot; Mel had fried its circuits. 'Don't eat them! Just swat them. Tell every cat in London. Save Earth! Go!' Mel said, 'Could you speak cat when I travelled with you?' '... actually, no. More has changed since I cast that salt than I realised...'

'Don't worry. We're perfectly safe.' The Doctor flung open the TARDIS doors. Outside was outer space. Something shone out there -- two somethings. The TARDIS swooped closer. Bill realised she was looking at two stars. 'Put on these sunglasses. The white dwarf has been stealing matter from the red giant. Until --!' Everything went dazzling white. 'It's a nova!' gasped Bill. 3,000 years later: Snowdonia. A dark and brilliant sky. The Doctor stabbed a finger at the heavens. 'Same star. Bright, for a few days.' Bill beamed. 'Thank you for showing me this.' 'Your paper is due on Friday.'

All drabble slots are filled! Thanks to your generous donations, mum cat Sapphire's desexing is paid for! The vet also vaccinates, de-fleas, and de-worms the cats, and microchipped Didi for us -- she's already adopted. I hope we can rehome all the kittens. Now to finish the rest of the drabbles!
