Foraging tip - echinacea and purple cone-flower are the same thing.

Not only can you make tea with it, the flowers are edible, it’s a great pollinator plant, and you can make dyes from the flowers.

Tea can be made from all parts - roots, flowers, stem, and leaves.

Foraging tip: if you forage acorns don’t forget to soak the tannins out so you don’t get sick. Soak in cold water for a few days or use a hot water bath. Done when they don’t taste bitter anymore.

After that you can cook them or grind them up into a flour.

As tariffs loom I’ve been reviewing my foraging guides.

Kudzu is edible. That annoying invasive that grows everywhere?

Roast the root or use it as a starchy thickener. Smaller leaves can be cooked like spinach. Flowers can be used in jams and jellies, it’s got a grape-like flavor.

I’m here for the owls.
In October 2024 the California Fish and Game Commission unanimously approved naming the western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) as a candidate for potential listing as a protected species under the California Endangered Species Act.
