Electeds when they’re campaigning: Children are the future, we must fund afterschool.

Electeds when they’re passing a budget: I don’t see any reason to invest more in afterschool. It’s only been 10 years since a rate increase and it’s not like we’ve seen inflation, a pandemic & min wage incr 2x… 🙃

As well as remaining cuts to safety net programs like Community Schools and Student Success Centers.
While that's technically true, there are a number of education programs previously funded by federal $$ that the city saved last year, but only for a year - and are not funded in this preliminary budget. That includes almost $112 million for 3-K and $55 mil for special education preschool seats.
Mayor Adams now speaking to reporters just said “no cuts are being proposed in his preliminary budget,” which is a departure from previous years when he broad cuts.
