J.B. started to become disenchanted with performing, due to the lack of success he had hoped for. The last straw happened one night while playing in a club. A couple began to fight in the audience, and the woman involved grabbed J.B’s guitar, breaking it over her husband's head. That was enough for Hutto. He walked away from music for the next 11 years, supplementing his income by working as a janitor in a funeral home.

We’d just been transferred by bus to our second prison, Givon, between West Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

"During the early 70’s the Nigerian government and their cronies in the police department consistently raided Fela’s communal family compound “The Kalakuta Republic”, viewing it as both a social and political threat. In 1974, the police once again invaded Fela’s compound, this time planting a joint on the artist, who promptly swallowed it, destroying any evidence of illegal activity. Fela was arrested, and was held in jail until he could produce a “sample” in order for the evidence to be recovered. Due to some miraculous help from other prisoners, Fela’s “sample” came back completely clean, and he was released without charges. The experience is recounted in the title track, “Expensive Shit”, in which Fela discusses the lengths the police went to in order to literally examine his shit."

If they had been recognised in the US, it wasn’t quite the same with the comedy establishment in Britain."

But while Irish citizens – including potentially here on the island of Ireland – are accused of terrorism for protesting an acknowledged genocide, the Irish Government has so far remained silent. When our citizens are arrested under authoritarian regimes elsewhere, the State and its consular services tend to spring into action, or at least purport to, in order to defend the human rights of Irish passport holders. Now that the jurisdiction in question is located next door – and indeed closer still – our leaders seem curiously unwilling to act. If the Government in Dublin truly believes that Israel is committing genocide, how can it look elsewhere while its nearest neighbour funds and supports that genocide and its own citizens are arrested simply for speaking out?

just saw this detail from the Irish Times article (referenced here) where the guards are comparing instances of racial hatred to 'a few months ago', when everything was cool and good
The Irish Times "There were 676 hate crimes and hate-related incidents in the State in 2024. According to Garda sources, that number is on track to increase this year. However, there is little statistical evidence to show Indian nationals are being singled out, gardaí say. Sources stressed they are not downplaying the attacks which have occurred. Neither are they saying racism is not a motive in at least some of them. What they are saying is that Indians living in Ireland have no more reason to feel afraid than they did a few months ago.

Mr Marr also asked Ms Abbott: "You yourself said a defeat for the British State would be a great liberation, a great move forward, at that period of time. Do you regret your support for the IRA back in the Eighties?" Ms Abbott replied: "That particular quote you're referring to comes from a now defunct Left newspaper. "It was 34 years ago. I had a rather splendid afro at the time. I don't have the same hairstyle and I don't have the same views. "It is 34 years on. The hairstyle has gone, and some of the views have gone." Mr Corbyn was later asked on ITV's Peston On Sunday if Ms Abbott's hairstyle comments trivialised the IRA. "Diane's hairstyle is a matter for Diane," he replied.

"With the exception of the Soviet Union and Cuba, the internalised consensus is strongest when the Middle East is being reported. Palestinians are only shown as refugees or as terrorists. The only stories about the Arab world that seem to be worth printing or portraying concern violence, inordinate wealth, and intransigent opposition to Israel. To compare the Israeli with the American press in the matter of coverage of the Israeli-Occupied Territories is to compare night with day. The reporting by Israeli journalists is detailed, wide-ranging, tough, often angry, American reporting is none of these things. Instead of doing journalism on the Middle East, the American media fill little containers with items that relate to some six master topics: 1..." continued ..."six master topics: 1. The pervasive presence of Arab or Islamic terrorism, as well as a terrorist network comprising Arab and Islamic groups and states backed by the Soviet Union, Cuba and Nicaragua. Terrorism here is most often characterised as congenital, not as having any foundation in grievances, prior violence or continuing conflicts. 2.
