The balance of teaching and research has been difficult to maintain this year. It’s wonderful to finally have the mental energy and time for new passion projects! #philosophy #phenomenology #EdithStein #summer

Thanks to the association for core texts for an incredible conference in Madison! I’m especially grateful for the kind reception of my paper on the philosophy of Hamlet, the discussions around expanding and diversifying canonical texts, and some good old fashioned thinking about Plato.

Next week I will be returning to King's University College to talk about the relevance of Weil and her concept of attention in our own age. I am looking forward to seeing friends, engaging with colleagues, and meeting new thinkers. Please consider coming if you’re in the London, Ontario area!

This is the line that began a transition for me from the life of the stage to the life of the mind. Hamlet remains one of my favourite philosophical texts to this day. #Hamlet #Theatre #Philosophy #Existentialism

The incredible life of Sister Dianne Ortiz is not a story any person would want to experience first-hand. Indeed, even experiencing it second-hand through reading her
biography, “The Blindfold’s Eyes: My Journey from Torture to Truth,” is not easy.

In applying Weil’s ethics to our lives, it is helpful to consider examples of others who have lived a Weilian ethical political life. In my opinion, one such person is Sister Dianna Ortiz (1958-2021).

3/3 My colleague Josh Livingstone and I set out to explore these ideas further in our collection on the political thought of Arendt and Weil published with Bloomsbury last year. There are a number of incredible contributions including on tyranny, refugees, democracy, bureaucracy and action.

In our political climate of populism, xenophobia, and an ever expanding chasm between “left” and “right”, the political thought of Arendt and Weil are incredibly vital. One of the texts that inspired my own work is Roberto Esposito’s “The Origin of the Political: Hannah Arendt or Simone Weil?” 🧵

Reading this line in Simone Weil’s notebooks made me realize I had to apply her ethics to the current ecological crisis.
