Questions have the power to shape classroom culture. Subtle, carefully considered & crafted questions can guide expectations, manage behaviour & ensure every learner is involved and thinking hard, something I explore in my upcoming book. Available to pre-order now! www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Guide...

Tutor time is really important but it can be difficult to ensure the time is not wasted, so this book by Nathan Burns hits the nail on the tutor time head! 👏 Brilliant!

Correct or Consolidate - a simple but powerful technique combining whole class feedback & self assessment. I observed this in action in a brilliant Year 1 lesson at Story Wood School in Birmingham. It would work well for other types of quizzing too, with factual knowledge, vocabulary or MFL.

Inspired by Arthur Melton, I added attendance to the model because it's essential students understand the link between attendance & learning. I added 'regular' to retrieval because it shouldn't be a one off. Finally, once students can retrieve knowledge & vocabulary they need to apply & transfer it.

Revision Clock (by Becky Russell). My students found it to be a helpful template. The resources provides opportunities for chunking, encoding and retrieval, spacing, can help time management, organisation & enable self assessment. You can download the template for free

There are lots of ways to provide opportunities for retrieval practice. There are benefits/limitations to different techniques that's why I embrace variety. As a history teacher, quizzes are great for knowledge recall but students must be given opportunities for elaboration & application too.

I am very excited to be presenting at The International School of Monaco, at this brilliant event. The key themes are to innovate, share & empower! I will be sharing a wide range of evidence inspired & workload friendly feedback techniques to support all learners.

The same visuals can be used in the encoding & retrieval stages of the learning process. This is known as the 'Encoding Specificity Principle' (Tulving & Thompson 1973!), a retrieval cue can provide a prompt to support initial retrieval success, especially if students have seen the cue before! 👏

"The only thing that matters with feedback is the reaction of the recipient. That's it. Feedback - no matter how well designed - that the student does not act upon is a waste of time." Dylan Wiliam (2017). Feel free to use & share my student guide if you think it's helpful!😊
