reading english translations of Japanese novels when you know a bit of Japanese is interesting because the parts where they had trouble translating certain cultural concepts are very noticeable

the main problem with house of guinness, beyond the Irishy Irishness of it and the extreme overuse of the word bonehead, is that I'm clearly supposed to root for the Protestant gentry in a weirdly uncomplicated way

Why have UK news sites suddenly started requiring that you either subscribe or accept all cookies to use the site? Before they seemed to be bound by the EU rule for cookies to be easily refusable, but clearly that's changed

at a certain point I do have to accept that Irish people love country music but I'm not exactly happy about it

Currently reading middlemarch and it's very frustrating that every time the main characters' storylines get interesting suddenly I have to read paragraph after paragraph about young Crunch and some fuck called Borthrop Trumbull

I've completed an analysis of the spoiled voter in the link below. This is a voter who will invariably come into play in the future.

This might be controversial but I do think this election does suggest a need for reform to the Irish presidential system. we only have two candidates in a political system that is usually very pluralistic, and neither of them are overly exciting to the electorate

"It seems plausible that the average Irish person would have little to no idea who Maria Steen even is. They definitely don’t know who Gareth Sheridan is. They know who Conor McGregor is, of course, but for the most part they despise him."

this is crude to say but starmer could goose step out on stage, throw a nazi salute & order every immigrant rounded up into camps, & it wouldn't convince a single fascist to vote for him, because what they want isn't rational. a far-right party would simply say "we'll do that but more & faster"
