I did not get those same feelings from #TheSubstance, and maybe it's because of the ageism angle, but I do feel like it was reaching for the level of discomfort you get in #PerfectBlue and not quite getting there.

#PerfectBlue is a film I've watched twice and likely never will again, because it's genuinely uncomfortable. It makes the viewer complicit in the protagonist's exploitation. Which ultimately drives home the film's message.

But I think the ending went on too long, and in terms of tackling the general idea of the exploitation of women in the entertainment industry, I kept comparing it to #PerfectBlue, and honestly think #PerfectBlue was more subtle and more unnerving. #TheSubstance

Don't get me wrong, the acting in #TheSubstance was amazing, as was the cinematography. The body horror was genuinely skin-crawling. And its take on the themes of ageism in entertainment were handled really well.

The acting in #MonsterTheEdGeinStory makes me want to continue watching (it's phenomenal!), and I really hate that these narrative choices make that so unappealing. I haven't watched a lot of modern TV in a while, and if this is what it's like now, it's not making me excited to explore more.
