I really want to read this book (although I will probably have to wait until the next time I am in the UK to get my hands on it!)
I think the point about not treating people as symbols is so utterly vital.

I cannot overstate how much I hate ‘In Flanders’ Fields’, a poem where the whole point is ‘all these masses of men died tragically, so you should go kill more people & probably die yourself’. It was used to recruit & send yet more men to pointless deaths.

Read Sassoon & Owen on Remembrance Day.

I really appreciate everyone who came to my book launch yesterday! Thank you! You are all lovely people!
(So are the people who couldn’t make it, obviously).

I also found out that Queen Books sells these & came home with 3 more.
I might have a British Library Tales of the Weird problem.

It’s I Read Canadian Day!
I actually am a Canadian (there was a lot of waiting & paperwork, but I got there!)
My latest book, WE BURY NOTHING, is set in Canada during WWII. It is about complicity & resistance.
Available from libraries & bookshops.

I am a pathetic person who needs large amounts of sleep. I am never following baseball again.

November has tied me
To an old dead tree
Get word to April
To rescue me
November's cold chain

Made of wet boots and rain
And shiny black ravens
On chimney smoke lanes
November seems odd
You're my firing squad

thank fuck for this

there's a massive difference between saying "I believe x about a group" and saying "that group may not have dignified use of toilet facilities in the public sphere"

the first is your own beliefs, religious or quasi. the second makes a country fundamentally unsafe. for everyone
You'll have to ignore the buckets of anti-trans campaigning commentary in the piece, but the basic news is quite simple. The EHRC has failed to get the government to accept its anti-guidance in haste. Something is holding it up, perhaps for another a year www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...
Rules forcing trans people to use birth-sex facilities delayed
The Equality and Human Rights Commission set out statutory guidance on how gyms, clubs and hospitals must judge single-sex spaces based on biology

Everyone realizes that trick or treating ends at 8pm in Toronto, right? Lights out on the dot as everyone pretends they’re out of candy.
Start early, kids.

My mum has just arrived, visiting from back home. Overjoyed to see her, obviously.
Also delighted to see the books she brought for me.

Do you know how some weeks are everything all at once weeks?
This was definitely one of those weeks.
But it’s done now, and I get to watch the Blue Jays in the World Series tonight.

I love this for us.

Been a tough weekend, due to the sudden and unexpected death of an old friend. I wish I’d messaged him recently.

Tell people you care about them before it is too late.

The idea that someone can become British but never English is so agonisingly stupid that it makes me fear for the future of the species.

My new book is on order at the Toronto Library! You can put it on hold now so you can grab one of the 12 copies when they come in.

www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?E...

It’s also available through many other library systems in North America, so see if yours has it.

Libraries are the best.

This is today! 2:45pm!
I'll to be signing my new book WE BURY NOTHING at Word on the Street tomorrow. Come and visit at my publisher's booth (and check out the other wonderful authors, too!).
It's at David Pecaut Square this year (St Andrew Station), and I'll be signing at 2:45 on Sunday.
This, as always, terrifies me.
