The PRC *does* strategically quash sectors using a variety of methods incl. overproduction, so we should have selective ways of strategically protecting; but we also need to be identifying the next generation tech that the US could have an advantage or develop.

& once sectors or products are entangled with national security angle, regardless of *actual risk* it’s extremely difficult for experts to help the political apparatus understand or decide otherwise. It also means that real hazards often are missed bc of a lack of nuance.

e.g. see Jonas Nahm’s excellent work. However, there were political advantages in capturing disillusionment (offshoring & outsourcing starting in the 80’s left real scars) & directing it towards an other (e.g. Autor et al’s work on voting shifts & manufacturing / Newman & Skocpol for union shifts).

I highly recommend, it was such a pleasant ride. Super well maintained, great community, and gorgeous scenery. We only saw a handful of fellow riders too — early sept was dreamy!

Got my parents & sibling out the door to do WV’s Greenbriar Rail Trail as a biketour (old bones). It was also dog’s longest trip. They loved it so much we’re doing the Mickelson trail in SD next year.

I find it ironic that the same billionaires clambering for Russian & Chinese style capitalism (kleptocratic & autocratic) cannot see their reflection in oligarchs falling out of windows or CEOs disappearing; or alternatively, in the consequences of anti-corruption measures domestic or international.

And given the number of individuals both inside and close to this administration that have conspired against American interests and profited, I expect that large parts of the government could be reconstituted based on those assets.
