And in the ITYSL sketch, he would get to the game night and there would be no ring toss, but then WHY DID THEY MENTION A RING TOSS IN THE EMAIL? No, he didn't actually get the email, but Gerry said there was ring toss in the email, so he bought rings and has been practicing for 6 and a half days...

Maybe it's because I just watched an episode of The Chair Company, but I can't imagine anyone other than Tim Robinson delivering that line.

"I don't really care that much about basketball--"

Oh, really, commercial? You want to get us thinking about what "Grandma" doesn't care about? Like, that "she" has no sentient self at all and any relationship a human being tries to simulate with "her" will be entirely one-sided?

I'm just relieved that I wasn't totally failing to see an egregious misspelling!

I've never thought of it that way-- I think of spelling as having to do with the letters in a word, not the punctuation marks. But other writers and editors might think differently, especially when it comes to marks that are within words and not just around them.

Ah, that's what I was calling a punctuation error.

Wait, where's the spelling error? I see problems with capitalization, punctuation, and grammar but not spelling.

Look around for the surprises that pop up along the trail! Stay open to taking a detour if you need to! Some parts might feel like a slog, but you can try to find a shortcut or at least reassure yourself that the slog is building up your strength for more challenging hikes later on.

In recent years, after a long hiatus, I've returned to writing fiction. Part of my strategy is to think of drafting a story as going on a hike. A recreational hiker (I gather, not really being one myself) might have a destination in mind and a basic map, but the point is to enjoy the hike itself.

I fear that my writing will fall short of my own standards somehow, so I procrastinate and avoid it as if the failure is going to hurt. But once I get over myself and actually start writing (whether for my job or for an independent project), I remember: "Oh, this is fun! And I have some skill!"
