It spins and twirls, arms flailing in a symphony of colors, yet its garbled song is full of rotten smiles. “It slips!” It had cried out to me once, its voice like a crow seeking prey: “Tears of rapids that consume gentile lands of gold.” It sung out, a preposterous lyric. It stole the wind from my lute with no pity: “Pain aches and willingly consumes. My friend, you are nothing but a morsel to this great fiend.” It whispered at last, its grin never to cease.

Lately, I've been thinking. A frivolous venture, and yet I sit upon a broken chair, pondering. Then it came, its decrepit voice filled with ire. "Why do you write?" It asked me. "Because it's what I'm good at," I responded with a bright grin. "You lie." It cackled, swift to respond, its poisonous breath dense. The painted mask slipped. "I ask again. Why do you write?" No longer a question, now a demand. The heavy weight of silence settled upon my lips, my gaze on trembling hands before lifting to meet the figure staring back at me. "For a sense of control," I choked, the venom assaulting my lungs, engulfing me whole.
