I think my strongest trait is not only grounding whatever story I'm working on, however silly and fun, in a reality that feels familiar -- but also, I think, it's conveying intimacy, not only in love scenes but also in moments that feel stolen, like this from 'i know that love will lead us'

"I thought about you when I was outside, and now here you are! Lucky me," he said, feeling satisfied, and then held out his arms. "Take Kibummie to bed! Yah, Choi Minho–"

Minho started laughing. "Yeah, yeah, I should have known this part would never change," he complained, but he didn't sound mean. "Come on, big guy, let's get you to bed. I can't believe you drank this much. You're gonna regret it tomorrow, you know." He dumped Kibum onto his bed and set about helping Kibum undress. Shirt, then trousers, then socks, until Kibum was dressed only in his underwear and a pout.

Kibum wiggled his toes. "Minho, come here." He held out his arms.

With a sigh, Minho sat beside Kibum on the bed, Kibum's pajamas in one hand. "I'm here."

Even drunk, with the room swaying around him, Kibum could focus on this, the important thing. "I won't."

Minho's brow furrowed. "Won't what?"

Kibum put his hands on Minho's shoulders, thumbs on his collar bones. Focus. "I won't regret it. I don't regret any of it." And he didn't – not kissing Minho in that practice room, not falling apart in Minho's arms, not even drunkenly pestering Minho now. "I really love you, Choi Minho."

Something tender crossed Minho's features. Kibum's pajamas ended up on the ground as Minho pulled Kibum against him, laid Kibum out on the bed, and kissed him. They made out like that, twined close. It was rare that Kibum had ever been kissed like this, and it was nice. Really nice. Or it was, that is, until Kibum shivered.

That said, I enjoy writing a period piece, and a fairy tale pastiche especially! The previous examples are all from SHINee fics, but here's a snip from my BTS fic, "The Polar Midnight" which is a retelling of 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon'.

Hoseok wasn't sure what a scholar was doing in a guild for artists and performers. He wondered if this Namjoon was a calligrapher, or perhaps a poet and orator. He'd grown up with his librarian father, however, and knew a scholar at thirty paces, let alone at arm's length.

"Namjoon-ah, are you performing after the meal tonight?" Leader Bang looked expectant.

Namjoon turned a bit pink. "If you don't mind? I have something new I'd like to try out."

The guild leader smiled fondly. "Of course." He turned to Hoseok. "You're in for quite the special performance."

Hoseok nodded, internally fortifying himself for a long poetry recitation.

Imagine his surprise, then, when Namjoon turned out to be a pansori performer, reciting poetry in rhythm over music, not quite singing but not quite reading aloud, either.

Slack-jawed, Hoseok could only applaud as the show came to a close.

"Our Namjoon is bringing something new to the world of pansori," the guild leader explained.

Hoseok shut his jaw with a click and turned to face him. "Sir," he said slowly. "Does this mean we are free to explore dance styles? We don't need to adhere to the classic forms?"

Guild Leader Bang's eyes seemed to shine in the low light. "I was hoping you would ask that. Yes, I encourage it."

The room seemed brighter, and Hoseok did not realize that his excitement had rendered him literally incandescent.

I don't usually do full-tilt fantasy or sci-fi but I don't mind rolling those elements into a story, either! 'Rein it In' and 'the stars hiding in the sunlight' both had fantasy elements. The clip below is from the latter -- affectionately called "gumihofic" by my friends:

Kibum slumped over, breathing hard into Minho's shoulder. His heart was slowing down, and he could feel sweat and come cooling on his skin. He felt the soothing touch of Minho's hands on his back.

"Oh my god– Kibum. Kibum!"

"Hmm?" He needed a minute to catch his breath.

"You're….fuzzy." He sounded like he was in awe.

"I haven't shaved today, I know."

"No, I mean–" And then Minho touched Kibum's ear. Not his human ear – his fox ear.

A ticklish kind of shiver skittered over Kibum's nerves. He looked over his shoulder and realized all nine of his tails had manifested in the mortal plane. As had, apparently, his ears. "Oh, hell," Kibum said, watching his tails, each as long as Kibum's leg, sway in the air. He sat up and felt Minho slip out of him.

(Circuit broken.)

Half the tails detached from Kibum's form to cuddle into Minho's chest and side. Kibum inwardly rolled his eyes. He knew his tails would reflect his id but this was a little too on the nose.

"They're so fuzzy," Minho whispered, petting the tails and failing to hide his grin. "I didn't know you were a red fox. The tails are so cute, and your ears, what the fuck."

"The black tips are how you would know I'm a gumiho and not a natural fox," Kibum said, reaching up to feel one ear. With a sigh, he got to his feet, stretching. He felt his shoulders pop. "Wait here, I'll get tissues or something.”

Minho nodded distractedly, more tails now clamoring for his attention. One tail remained with Kibum as he went downstairs to the bath.

"You're my favorite," he whispered to it, and it wrapped itself over his shoulder.

I also really enjoy writing romcoms, and I try to include group scenes when I can! My usual rule-of-thumb is, everyone gets one good zinger in the course of the fic, even Minho ;) Here's a snip from "roll for initiative":

"And so, the princess was saved and our heroes lived to see another day," Jonghyun read from his paper. "The end."

The other four clapped, and Jonghyun took a bow. After a moment, he sat back down. "Okay, so I started thinking about our next campaign–"

"Hard pass," Kibum said, already scrolling through his phone.

"I've got a really busy course load next quarter," Jinki added, sounding apologetic.

"I'm planning to study abroad," Taemin revealed, rolling the dice in his hands. "Jongin and I got into the dance fellowship."

"I could bring my basketball hyungs," Minho said. "They're all taller than me, you'll love them, hyung–"

"Okay, fine," Jonghyun said, throwing his hands in the air. "No second campaign. I don't want to see those two make out through a battle ever again anyway." He gestured at Minho and Kibum with disdain.

"It distracted the enemy," Minho defended hotly.

"And kissing in real life added verisimilitude to the scene." Kibum did not look up from his phone when he cut in, nor when he successfully high-fived Minho.

"Get out of my house," Jonghyun said.

"This is a cafe…?" Taemin looked around, as if to verify.

I mention in my offer letter that I love writing off-beat ideas and concepts. No fic better exemplifies that than 'fiberfill and roving' which is told from the perspective of.... a large stuffed teddy bear.
