My biggest takeaway from this course is just how many forms of communication there are. The theories, approaches, dialectics, practices, etc. It just goes to show what I have always and will always think, that every single person communicates in their own unique ways.

My favorite theory to learn about was Relational Dialectics. Not only did this theory interested me the most. I enjoyed learning about the discourses, because it allowed me to compare fictional/tv/movie character relationships to these discourses, and I love my fictional characters.

I believe Agenda-Setting theory is still relevant. However, it's played out differently now. I feel we are more in control of what we see, since our algorithms push more of what we are interested in. Yet, sometimes feel I am falling down rabbit holes of the same piece of a story.

Recently, we've seen cuts to many benefits, specifically in the healthcare field. It shows how many people are/are going to struggle and need help they may not be able to receive.

I think I have a parasocial relationship with Matthew Lillard. He is one of my favorite actors, and is in many of my favorite movies. His range of characters is incredible to me, from Shaggy to Stu Macher to Tim LaFlour. I find myself quoting his characters more than I care to admit.

Netflix values acceptance and representation. For example in Stranger Things we see a variety of characters; different races, genders, sexualities, social statues, classes, and more. We see them struggle, succeed, love, do good, etc. It helps viewers see themselves represented in media

I really used to post anything and everything I did/thought about on social media, especially Instagram stories. No wonder I am so private about my life now, so embarrassing. 🫣

Ai has negatively affected my learning because I feel like professors just assume everyone uses it now to do their work. While some may do that, a lot of us are putting real time and effort into our work for it to just be discredited.

I engage in nonassertive assimilation often on social media by censoring self. I never post where I am until after I am home, if any houses (mine or my family's) are in the picture I make sure the address is blurred out. I don't include my schools or work, and accounts stay private.

I would definitely say I respond best to participation. It not only makes me feel involved but makes me feel seen, important, and heard. Feeling these ways improves my attitude and work ethic.

I believe many schools/colleges/universities can use a cultural shift. Not every student is the same, we go through different struggles and situations. I think students can use more understanding and empathy. Schools are better at this than in the past, work can always still be done.

I think that learning to drive is scary.
I am (trying) to learn how to drive.
So, I am scared of it.

Lately, doing nothing and scrolling on my phone has been my go-to day. However, as the day ends and the things I needed to get done are still not finished, I feel like I wasted an entire day. I know I need to get things done and feel productive but I end up just laying around.

I agree with this claim. When I am close to someone I usually follow all of their socials, spam accounts included, but also send them things I think they will find funny or relatable, and anything that reminds me of them or anything they like.

On FaceBook I'll see family members posting personal issues in their children's lives, especially relationship problems. . I know that their children don't want everyone on Facebook to know. It makes fuzzy boundaries and lets me know not to confide in them about those kinds of things.

Hopper and Joyce in Stranger Things show openness vs closedness. Both have experienced trauma and failed relationships. They try to hide their feelings while also pushing the other to open up. Earlier seasons we see a lot of closed-off behavior causing miscommunication and conflict.

Axiom #2: Nonverbal warmth is big to me, especially at work. Everyone has their own way of speaking so sometimes it's hard to tell what they really mean or how they feel. A small smile or soft eyes tells me they feel like I'm doing a good job.

I work at a bakery and was taking a cake order with a mother of a bride. She went into a very long story about how this wedding was small because it was her daughter's 2nd marriage. She went into detail about how much failed and why. It was a very awkward chat, I felt like this:

My family is the consensual type. We just knew that our parents were in charge or are the "leaders". However, we were all open and honest with each other about things, especially rules/conflicts. It helped my siblings and I learn that even if we aren't in charge, we still have a voice. #UTcommtheory

My mom was on her phone texting, I hovered near. She asked if I needed anything, I shook my head. She asked if I was okay, I nodded. Laughing, she shooed me away, telling me to stop trying to snoop through her phone. It shows our caring and comfortable relationship with each other.

The tradition I found most appealing was Phenomenological. I love how everyone is living their very own life and no one is living in the same way. The fact we cannot experience another person's experience is so cool to me. So, it makes sense I was drawn most to this tradition.

I believe the most important criteria is understanding of people. Everyone is so different and has had their own experiences. It's better to try to understand a theory from people who have gone through/relate to that specific theory versus looking for that theory in everyone. #UTcommtheory

I think I have more of an interpretative approach. I believe that almost everything has different meanings or multiple truths, because everyone sees and interprets things in other ways. Sometimes there are no right or wrong answers, there are just different meanings.
