One of my favorite Lee Morgan albums is Indeed, his debut as a leader on Blue Note. I wanted to use opening track ”Roccus” in my doc I Called Him Morgan. For unknown reasons composer Horace Silver said no. Instead I chose Gaza Strip from this album. Not because of its title, but the exuberant feel.

RIP Sven-Åke Johansson, drum legend from Mariestad, Sweden. Thank you for the music. He participated on classic albums such as Brötzmann’s Machine Gun and For Adolpe Sax, my favourite with him (I do love solo drumming albums) is Schlingerland / Dynamische Schwingungen (FMP/SÅJ 1972).

Can never get enough of the life affirming ”You Ain’t Gonna Know me ’Cos You Think You Know Me” (track 2 on side 1). ❤️ RIP and thank you for the music Louis Moholo m.youtube.com/watch?v=CJlP...

Tonight in my hometown Göteborg - Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. An extraordinary group, led by percussionist Kahil El’Zabar from Chicago. Thank you Clandestino. clandestinofestival.org/2025/kahil-e...

I got Dart Drug as a gift by Iris Bearhope Orton and her life companion Birgitta in Stockholm in around 2001. Bengt Frippe Nordström gave it to them in the mid 1980s.

On this day 20 years ago my feature documentary My Name Is Albert Ayler premiered at Göteborg International Film Festival.
If all goes well a restored and properly upscaled version will be rereleased later this year.

One of my favorite books about 1960s New York art, jazz and avantgarde jazz scene. Hettie Jones was Leroi Jones’ wife until he decided he couldn’t have a non-black wife anymore and became Amiri Baraka. Glad to see this posted by @helenbarrett.bsky.social in relation to the new Dylan biopic.

Love this. Had me thinking of this rather wonderful book.

Stort.

Watched Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths yesterday. Best film from 2024 I’ve seen. 5 stars. Makes me cry just thinking about it. Can’t remember when I last watched a movie that made me feel such an urge to try to give more ❤️

Ethan’s great article in @thenation.com has sparked an exciting amount of Slugs related posts on here. Here’s a brief clip from my Lee Morgan documentary I Called Him Morgan with handbills, interview with Slugs’ founder Jerry Schultz and pics of Helen and Lee.

Sorry to hear about the timing with your letter. Still great that you wrote and sent it. That’s very good news about the translation of Paradisets vägar. Many thanks for recommending. I have it here but it’s about 25 years since I read and this urge me to reread it.

So sad this. From Bennie’s son: ’My elderly father Bennie Maupin wasn’t able to grab anything but the clothes on his back! 70 years of history, family photographs, instruments, car and other family heirlooms completely gone. anything helps!’
Here’s Bennie (& me) at Marc Maron’s WTF pod some yrs ago.

Verkligen. Förhoppningsvis visning i Sverige snart.

R.I.P. and thank you for the music Barre Phillips. ❤️ This album - Call me when you get there - has been a soundtrack to many days of my life, and will be for many more I hope.
