But the experience with Perspectives was great and I am very happy it has now appeared as a much stronger paper. Happy reading and looking forward to engaging with you about our work!

Our experience at @poppublicsphere.bsky.social was fantastic, great editorial team and very good, critical but constructive reviewers! The experience with this paper really shook my trust in the process and I still hold a major grudge towards one of our top journals because of it.

This paper actually appears much later than it should have, many of the findings would have been great to have out there sooner. It was almost accepted in a journal years earlier (in 2021!!) but after three(!) R&Rs derailed by one reviewer and poor editorial judgment.

Shout-out to @plutscher.bsky.social, my fantastic co-author and collaborator but also to all of the colleagues who contributed to the project with ideas and critical feedback at different stages of the project.

And the first finding is even more striking if we consider that most of the democratic-leaning respondents had notably more negative perceptions of the Trump government. Even then we observe this relative increase in how they perceived political strength when exposed to strongman messaging.

Two findings are the most striking to me:

1. The very obvious unsubtle visual displays of power increased perceptions of government strength for respondents regardless of political leanings.

2. There was a partisan backlash in terms of protest mobilization only for democratic-leaning respondents.

We fielded a survey experiment with a randomized choice task to a nationally representative sample of U.S. respondents during the height of the BLM protests in summer 2020 where we tested their perceptions of different types of visual, strongman propaganda featuring president Trump.
