We lived in Alberta (Red Deer) for almost 10 yrs. The first winter we moved there, people were going into Sears and asking my spousal unit what kind of snowblower she'd recommend for clearing roofs. We saw lots of people using leaf blowers on their driveways and sidewalks. 2/2

Depends on where you live in Canada and the type of snow. Northern BC? Buy a snowblower (Honda on tracks, indestructible, price tag almost insurmountable). Average snow that's relatively dry? Get a rink snow shovel, they're wide and can clear a driveway lickety split. 1/2

This nice "little tradition" is more an enduring symbol of the support that sprang up from this massive tragedy and the call that was answered by our friends and neighbours. A nice little tradition doesn't last over a hundred yrs....Something bigger does.
