I've always felt most of the current political class is completely ignorant of dystopian scfi, history, and literature in general.

If they have been exposed to dystopian scifi, I can only conclude they are trying to implement as much of it as they can.

Possibly, but there are KPIs in that salary package that are never going to be met. So they are not going to be out of pocket anywhere near what the headlines say.

I think the question is how much do average voters care about climate change. Net Zero as a term, rather than the concept, is how politicians identify themselves as being in favour of, or against, positive climate action.

To anyone not engaged in the science or politics that's all it means.
