I am a mess, please be kind
Parents. That way families can make the decision of who will stay home with the child without women being specifically incentivized to sacrifice career for family.

I met Katharine Jefferts Schori, then the Presiding Bishop of my church, without realizing it. She sat next to me and we talked on the Metro on the way out of DC after Obama's inauguration. She said she was in town to give a service at the Cathedral, not mentioning it was THE service to Obama.

"This is Peggy, she wound up here after some really unfortunate investments..."

So you could say she got fleeced?

Reminds me of the X-Men. They basically stopped talking about them as a variant of humanity and started talking about them as an entirely new species because there was a tariff on imported dolls that represented humans.
December 29, 2025 at 4:47 PM
So my proposal was to drop the tariffs and instead continue to pay the workers for a couple of years after. It gives them time to find new work, learn a new trade, relocate, whatever, and it saves the rest of the country millions.

It's basically just an argument for unemployment insurance or UBI.
December 29, 2025 at 12:36 PM
I actually argued for something like that in college. At the time the economic costs of the trade barriers protecting American textile workers was estimated to be around $135k per job saved per year and the jobs themselves paid... I forget, I want to say $35-50k.

That's just inconsiderate.

To these aged eyes, that's what winning looks like!

It's a part of the plan. Next they say that since this is a dangerous behavior they're forced to regulate the medication more strongly. This makes acquiring it criminal behavior, allowing them to arrest and charge transgender people.

But just think about how rich this oil will make all of us. I mean, not us because it'd be given over to oil companies that are already massively wealthy, but it'll bring down gas prices and that'll be nice.

Unless oil is a fungible commodity.

It's not, is it?

Somebody should check on that.

Cruel, but fair, Tiff. Cruel, but fair.
December 16, 2025 at 3:53 PM
That... Yes, that changes the context quite a bit... Fuck.
December 14, 2025 at 12:53 PM
It may be the economist in me, but it doesn't sound fatalistic so much as recognition of a problematic conflict of interest we need to find new incentives to correct.

Asking them to get immunized? Tyranny, don't tell them what to do.

Using the Justice Dept. to go after political enemies? Not tyranny, they're on this administration's side.

Using the Justice Dept. to go after insurrectionists? Tyranny, they don't want to go to jail.
December 14, 2025 at 9:13 AM
The people who say that believe tyranny refers to any effort to get them personally to support the society they live in. If it doesn't affect them personally, it's not actually tyranny.

Masked federal agents kidnapping minorities off the street? Not tyranny, they're not a minority.

The USMC was founded to oppose piracy. Our first two major wars after independence were the Barbary War and 1812, both of which were fought largely over the issue of American ships being seized.

Regardless, there is NO WORLD where the extrajudicial murder of civilians makes you a good guy.
December 14, 2025 at 4:13 AM
Can't imagine why her children don't want to talk to her...
December 13, 2025 at 3:51 PM
Pretty sure they're saying that because you're critical of AI, you're ableist...
December 13, 2025 at 3:32 PM
Then the proper response would be economic sanctions, international coalition building through the UN, and if it is serious enough then military action should be approved through congress.

At no point is piracy and extrajudicial murder an appropriate response.

I dunno. It'd be nice to have a threat to my existence nobody can do anything about. It'd almost be a relief after so many threats people *could* do things about but choose not to.

I reluctantly, but proudly, accept this responsibility and what I am assuming is a large annual stipend that accompanies it.
