The ICOS Atmosphere station Hegyhátsál in Hungary produces greenhouse gas data that can be used by scientists everywhere.

Being part of ICOS has also been beneficial for the station. “Joining ICOS helped us maintain the Hungarian scientific capacity in this field of science”, says László Haszpra

How much CO2 is emitted by #wildfires, and what part does soil play? Recent study used data from the 2022 European wildfires to assess #carbon emissions from soil smoldering in temperate forests. Data from ICOS sites in 🇫🇷 used in the study. Check the thread below! bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/...
🚨NEW SCIENTIFIC STUDY🚨

8 million tonnes of CO2
~ 2% of french greenhouse gas emissions 🔵⚪🔴
~ 30% of the national sequestration capacity of the forest🌳

That's the carbon emissions from fires in 2022! 🔥

⚠️Predominant effect of soil combustion

"...It's getting faster, moving faster now, it's getting out of hand..."
NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

I would admire the #dataviz if the data being visualised wasn't so terrifying 😟🔥
2024 was the warmest year on record with an average global temperature 1.6°C above pre-industrial level.

It's the first year to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial level, with every month but one since July 23 surpassing this threshold.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.
