I only make this once a year, but my pecan pie is 🔥. Brown butter, bourbon, double the pecans of the standard recipe, and a good dose of salt.
A pecan pie, fresh out of the oven and positively glowing. The homemade crust is perfectly golden brown and has little bubbles that tell you it’s going to be flaky af. The pecan filling is a darker brown and comes up the crust as far as it can without spilling over. The GOAT Thanksgiving pie.

Inwood farmers market, August 2. Whenever I see the right wing manly men who are scared of cities, I think of this: In a balanced system, the city and the country support each other.
A goddamn bounty of fresh summer produce, all grown within 100 miles of New York City, splayed out across a small kitchen counter. Corn, a cantaloupe, spring onions in a bunch with their scalliony shoots tied together, Italian parsley, a small bundle of purple and green broccoli rabe, basil, a bag of baby arugula, green cardboard boxes of blueberries, bright yellow shiro plums, and cherry tomatoes, small piles of bright orange nectarines and muted white peaches, a fat cucumber, red and yellow and green tomatoes, four different types of peppers, and three paper-skinned shallots.

I needed this reminder that there is abundance even in the darkest times

A couple days late, but here’s Saturday’s gleanings from the farmers market. Very winter, very demure.
A grouping of winter vegetables on a kitchen counter. The picture is dominated by three huge-looking potatoes. They aren’t really that big, they were just closest to the camera. There’s a bundle of pale green baby bok choy next to an even paler green (almost white to be fair) head of fennel, a couple of large purple-red shallots with papery skin, a sturdy rutabaga peeking out behind everything, and a scattering of small round brussels sprouts. It’s not the abundance of fall harvest, but it’s fresh and local and good.

First official day of winter, and my farmers market haul is a study in green.

Back to the market after a week off for covid. I love the winter market, at least at the start of the season. Peep that kale!
