Haven't watched a film since Monday (because of work, football, and my wife and me catching up on shrinking), and it feels so wrong...

Excited to see this on the big screen, maybe even more after the more mixed reception following Cannes.

Today was my son's (4) first time at the cinema, and we watched this cute animated film from France. Absolutely age appropriate, beautiful animation and cute stories. Also, almost wordless with good visual storytelling.
My son's verdict: cool.

Just watched Karakter, and wow. Incredibly paced and atmospheric, this character study plays more like a thriller, with fantastic performances and superb direction. An underseen gem that's in dire need of a broad rediscovery. Would love to have a nice boutique label release of this.

Watched Crimes of the Heart, and wow, what a misfire. There's absolutely nothing I could mention as a positive here, rarely have I struggled to connect to something as much as here, with all three leads playing to the last row without any trace of real emotions. Tonally a mess, uninspired visuals.

Yesterday's entertainment was The Morning After, and it's probably the weakest Lumet I've seen to date. What's positive about it is mostly thanks to a dedicated perfomance by Jane Fonda, but that's it. A messy script, and the wrong director for this material.

Just watched Children or a Lesser God, and was positively surprised how well it worked, in large parts to an incredible Marlee Matlin. The film has its problems (filmic and thematic), but considering when it was made, it's a positive portrait of disability that's not looking down.

Watched Charly, and wow. Really offensive, Robertson is just grimacing, the worst way to portray a mentally handicapped person. Even when he's smart, he's incredibly bland and uninteresting. The film itself is ridiculous, including weird montages and split screens. A damn joke, but not a good one.

I also watched A Passage to India a few days ago, only a mere 11 years after I bought the DVD. I liked it, though not as much as Lean's previous big films.

My ★★★½ review of A Passage to India on Letterboxd boxd.it/57bbMF
Review of ‘A Passage to India’ (1984) ★★★½
David Lean came back after a 14 year hiatus following the bad reviews of Ryan's Daughter, and while A Passage to India doesn't reach the heights of his earlier masterpieces, there's still a lot of…

Just watched The Seven-Ups by Philip D'Antoni, recommended because of its car chase scene. And that's exactly the reason to see it, because it's great. The rest is a generic, grim 70s NYC police procedural where you can see D'Antoni trying for The French Connection, but William Friedkin he's not.

Just finished watching Pablo Larrain's El Conde, and while I admit that I might not know enough about Pinochet to get everything here, I don't think that the satire works. It's a good concept, but the film doesn't go anywhere rewarding with it, leaving me mostly impressed with the cinematography.

Wrote a lot of words on Killers of the Flower Moon, a film that laid heavy on my mind after watching it...
Review of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (2023) ★★★★★
A film about love and family, but also about greed and cowardice, and also about the way we tell stories. What could be a police (or rather FBI) procedural instead becomes an elegy about racism in…

Saw The Blade yesterday, and I'm more confused than anything. While I certainly was fascinated, I the choreography of the fight scenes felt intense, they also were sometimes too messy to make out what's happening. The story didn't do too much for me though. Still figuring out what to make of it.

Watched One Night of Love recently, and it's basically Pygmalion with an opera context. Its reliance on songs betrays this as an early talkie, and it feels pretty basic and stale overall, but Grace Moore has enough to offer to avoid this being a total bore. Still a rather long 84 minutes.

Just finished watching Educating Rita, and i have to say, I'm positively surprised. Really expected it to go a few other ways, and good work opening up the play. Caine is very good, Walters is excellent. A tad too long, but a pleasant watch if somewhat lighter emotionally than it aims for.

Watched Tribute by Bob Clark today. Weird little film that lives mostly off of the strength of Jack Lemmon's performance, who strikes the balance between comedy and drama better than the film overall does. Also, the film looks like a cheap made for TV movie, which doesn't do it any favors.

I just watched Costa-Gavras's Missing, and man, that was a tough watch. Lemmon and Spacek are phenomenal, and I genuinely find it fascinating that a film like this was financed with American studio money. Almost impossible to imagine today.

Just watched An Officer and a Gentleman for the first time. The romance worked very well, and Winger, Gossett Jr., and Gere all do good work here. Liked it more than I anticipated.

Just saw The French Lieutenant's Woman, and I'm not quite convinced that the narrative trick of the meta story actually enhances the emotional or thematic points of the film. Irons is ok, Streep isn't at her strongest, overall a bit of a disappointment.

Just watched Ladies Man. Rather slow and uneventful, with the last few minutes trying unsuccessfully to heighten the tension. Only recommended if you're a huge fan of Powell or Francis, and even then, it's a rough watch.

Just watched Mandalay. Decent pre code film that is strongest in its third act. Being an hour long, it's definitely worth checking out before it leaves the Criterion Channel the end of this month.
