In Praise of Postmenopausal Women
There are lots of jokes about menopause.  There are no jokes about post menopause.  Is that because we have internalized scientific reports summarizing the negative consequences of losing estrogen?  Weight gain, bone loss, heart disease, depression, and desiccated vaginas…How can you make that funny?  Recent debates about “childless cat ladies” suggest that the social consequences of not being able to procreate may be even more severe:  isolation and invisibility coupled with a lack of usefulness.

Getting old with heart requires being more vulnerable -- not an easy task, but I reflect on how being a woman with the usual baggage of insecurities led to many ways of "protecting" myself that I don't need any more.

Vulnerable: What’s in a Word?
"I came to explore the wreck. The words are purposes. The words are maps.I came to see the damage that was doneand the treasures that prevail." --Adrianne Rich Vulnerable: Susceptible to physical harm or damage, susceptible to emotional injury, or susceptible to attack. “Vulnerable populations” are unable to care for themselves; elderly people are “frail and vulnerable”.

A WAR AGAINST WOMEN: Trump decimates Title X: the nation’s only federal family planning program that provides affordable reproductive health care—birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings—primarily to low-income and uninsured patients.

On Friday afternoon, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration cannot shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — and must undo the actions already taken to dismantle it — while the case proceeds.
THANK YOU PUBLIC CITIZEN for bringing this -- I donate!

Decluttering Revisited– What About All Those Memories?
Photo by Aga Adamek on Unsplash We have memories throughout our lives. My youngest granddaughter, about to turn 8, talks about them often – a particularly engaging dream in the past, a game that we used to play when she was “little” (last year) but don’t anymore, something that she used to be but is not now (meat eater to vegetarian).

I no longer live in Minnesota, but I know an important institution like the Loft, which I dearly miss, needs to be celebrated...no one better able to capture this than Mark Gustafson

I just used Five Calls to tell my Rep/Senators to protest the unlawful arrest and incarceration of Mahmoud Khalil. Irrespective of your feelings about the content of his protest, he is a legal resident of the United States: If he can be arrested/deported, who will be next?
