We may be going towards a future where content is not controlled by platforms, but instead by people. Instead of restarting when a rich billionaire ruins a platform. We could instead just move to a different part of the open web. Keeping our work, follows, videos, and more.

Different platforms can use different lexicons for different goals. One platform may use only a few lexicons to create an experience focused on short videos. Another may try to use as many lexicons as possible. From posts to videos to recipes, etc.

However, not all platforms can see all lexicons. If you sign into a platform called Yellowbrick with your PDS and make a post of 1,000 characters Bluesky would not show these posts unless they chose to use that lexicon. Posts can be accepted by Bluesky, while Long-Posts cannot.

Everything stored in your PDS has a lexicon associated with it. A lexicon defines what a post, like, repost etc. looks like. Bluesky's lexicon defines a post as containing at most 300 characters and maybe containing an image or video attachment. Bluesky and other platforms can use lexicons to understand how to display a post.

A Personal Data Server (PDS) is your identity on Bluesky and any other platform using AT. It's connected to your Bluesky handle and contains all of your posts, likes, etc. You can have Bluesky or another provider host your PDS or you can host it yourself. Meaning you have full ownership of what you create.
