Today is National Drug Takeback Day, which started as a way to get unneeded & potentially misused meds (especially opioid painkillers) out of people’s homes & into safe disposal.

These days, there are many year-round dropboxes. But if you need a reminder to clear out your med cabinet, here it is!

Today I learned that Michigan’s statewide food bank council offers a hotline to help people find food and other resources near them.

Spread the word to help those in need. And if you can, donate to the food bank for your region - each one gets food to local pantries!

The pause in SNAP food assistance will affect millions of people nationwide.

Even in my wealthy 6th Congressional District, nearly 24,000 households rely on this assistance to put food on the table.

See data for your district here:

QUICK: if you live near a Kroger and have been wanting to try the Halloween trick or treat experiment to see if kids will choose a potato over candy, go buy these by midnight tonight!

Got a chance to hear @umich.edu President Grasso speak to communicators from across U-M this morning. Heartened to hear he will be asking all faculty to see themselves as public intellectuals and find ways to share how their work & expertise impacts the general public. My colleagues & I can help!

Looking for a way to honor the memory of Jane Goodall?

Buy a copy of this book for a child in your life, or for your local school or library. It's priceless.

Just gave to @michiganpublic.bsky.social in order to get my “I support the 1st Amendment” tote bag.

I think a lot of folks are seeing headlines about Covid vaccine restrictions & assuming they can’t get vaccinated before the rollout even begins.

Truth is, the list of qualifying conditions for folks under 65 is pretty long. And everyone over 65 automatically qualifies. www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/cl...

Today, Detroiters vote in a mayoral primary. But did you know that the @umich.edu #medschool owes its start to a #Detroit mayor, Dr Zina Pitcher?

Elected in 1840, he also served as a U-M Regent, and his report laid the foundation for the opening of the school 175 years ago! #medhist #histmed

Very proud of my husband for being named chair of physics at @waynestateclas.bsky.social after a year as interim!

Now I just have to persuade him to join this platform...

Playing the board game Pandemic with friends on vacation and wistfully looking at the white CDC HQ in Atlanta thinking of how things have changed in the 12 years since it was first published… and the 12 months since I last saw these friends. #publichealth

175 years ago this summer, the first @umich.edu Medical School building on the Diag was getting its finishing touches.

I trace the growth and spread of U-M medical education, care and research ever since then in this article & the map it links to: michmed.org/vQ5eZ #MichMed175 #histmed #medhist

Apparently I’ll eat anything except the silly gilded-lily “fancy food” of the oligarchs.

An interesting quiz probing the intersection of food and socioeconomic class in the US, based on Penn research: www.idrlabs.com/food-choice/...

It’s a cherry pitting machine that feeds the cherries into individual cells then rotates them into the path of a rod to poke out the pit. This orchard just got a new one to replace the 1938 one they used to use !

After you’re done cherry picking, remember to get them pitted…

Could some journalists please look into why the federal Eldercare Locator is giving an error message and a placeholder message (depending on URL)?

This is the source of truth to help older adults, families & others find aging-related services including the US directory of Area Agencies on Aging.
