The Vendôme Tower is over 300 years old, having been constructed in 1715 right at the edge of Ħal Biżbud in Żejtun. Its massive and robust appearance closely mimics that of a fortified building.

This very old church was one of the first in Malta to be built and never modified beyond restoration. The church of Saint Lucy in Mtarfa has an austere façade that is typical for Medieval chapels and churches built in Malta.

Malta is no stranger to attacks by the Ottoman Empire, particularly headed by the well-known corsair Dragut. Many know of the Great Siege of 1565 that left the islands in shambles yet victorious. However, there was another atrocious siege a few years before.

The landmark Villa Violette in Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa is located opposite the Marsa parish church. It has a balanced façade consisting of a central doorway with a twin columned portico that supports a closed wooden balcony at first floor level.

Remember when people would lower the ‘qoffa’ from the balcony? There was a widespread use of the traditional Maltese wicker basket called the qoffa in the past, and not just to carry the groceries.

For centuries they provided shelter and fresh clear water for locals to wash their clothes in. The communal wash-houses known as għejjun tal-ħassellin (singular: għajn tal-ħassellin) were supplied through a very old irrigation system year-round.
