The official who delivered the message, Paul Ingrassia, is a lawyer who previously represented the Tate brothers before joining the White House, where he was working as its DHS liaison.

"Transgender and queer activists have disappeared the idea of sex, and that means getting rid of the idea of sexual orientation and the whole basis of being gay," says Ann Menasche, 72, a civil-rights lawyer and lifelong gay rights activist based in San Diego. "I'm on the far left, but this really is not progressive." In 2022 Menasche was fired from her job at Disability Rights California after objecting to the omission of the word "women" in a statement her employer put out in favor of abortion rights and speaking out about sex-based rights. "I was called a bigot and a transphobe and such a danger to staff that I was refused unemployment," she said. (She filed a lawsuit, and the matter was litigated and resolved out of court. Disability Rights California did not respond to requests for comment.) But the more he read about queer theory, the more Arango rejected the concept of gender identity. "It was all based on stereotypes," he said, and anathema to gay kids like himself who were teased for not being "manly" enough. When Arango began expressing these views in 2022, his boyfriend dumped him and denounced him as a "transphobe." He lost most of his friends. What he had originally understood as a welcoming LGBTQ+ community now felt exclusionary and hostile. Out of the closet Nevline Nnaji, a 35-year-old artist who blogs about race, gender and creativity under the name N3VLYNNN, has lost friends and relationships as a result of her outspoken rejection of gender ideology and her insistence on lesbian and sex-based rights. She also resents some LGBTQ+ advocates' comparisons of transgender oppression to racial oppression, which she sees as illogical. "I have walked through fire and I continue to walk through fire in my personal life with friends saying, 'I can't hang out with you anymore because you said XYZ' or that they're afraid to be seen in my presence," Nnaji told me. In 2023, she lost the Instagram account she used as her professional platform after expressing support for black lesbian detransitioners, formerly trans people who revert to their birth-sex identity. Nnaji repeatedly tried to have her account restored to no avail. A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment but pointed out that Meta's hate-speech policy has since evolved. In January, the company lifted previous restrictions on topics that are "part of mainstream discourse."

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY OF ARGUMENT Judicial review of a President's policies should rest on sound legal analysis, not prejudgments. Yet plaintiffs and the court below dismissed any need for a deep dive here, casting their reading of the Citizenship Clause as settled and beyond debate. Never mind that plaintiffs' mere-presence-at-birth rule cannot be right all the time, as all agree. Or that it is contrary to the expressed view of many contemporaneous court cases and commentators. Or that it rewards illegal behavior in a manner no drafter or ratifier of the Citizenship Clause endorsed. Courts have viewed plaintiffs' correctness as a foregone conclusion, but that is seriously mistaken.

Nearly half of new recruits who've arrived for training at FLETC over the past three months were later sent home because they could not pass the written exam, according to the data. The academic requirement includes an exam where officers are allowed to consult their textbooks and notes at the end of a legal course on the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Fourth Amendment, which outlines when officers can and cannot conduct searches and seizures.

(In July 2019, following Epstein's arrest, Acosta resigned.) For reasons that remain unclear, the US government agreed to grant Epstein immunity from all federal criminal charges, along with four co-conspirators and any unnamed "potential co-conspirators."
As of August 2019, the co-conspirators have not been named. Epstein's deal with the FBI halted the broader investigation into the international sex trafficking ring. Epstein was soon set free, where he was welcomed by New York elites who seemed either apathetic to or amused by his arrest. Outlets like The New York Times praised his fine tastes and Ivy League affiliation, playing down the horror and scope of his crimes. In a 2008 article, Epstein compared himself to "Gulliver shipwrecked among the diminutive denizens of Lilliput" and noted that "Gulliver's playfulness had unintended consequences. That is what happens with wealth. There are unexpected burdens as well as benefits." In response, the New York Times reporter gushed about Epstein's private jet, neglecting to mention it was literally a vehicle of rape. A 2011 Daily Beast article describes New York's elites praising Epstein as a man of wealth and taste and even bringing their children to his home for a Break Fast celebration after Yom Kippur, unconcerned that he was convicted of raping other children. Among these elites were future Trump secretary of commerce Wilbur Ross and fellow accused child molester Woody Allen. Almost aniversally, they mocked and blamed the underage victims, whom they saw as an obstacle to the luxurious life to which they felt Epstein—and they themselves—were entitled. The lone dissenter was a Midwesterner shocked by the cruelty of their culture: "In the Midwest, where I am from, he would be a social pariah," political activist Lorna Brett Howard, the wife of a CEO invited into Fasten's social circle, told The Daily Beast. "What I see here is if you have big, money or are famous then you get a pass." While this new type of financialization takes many different forms, the endgame is the same: Most major corporations now aspire to become unregulated banks, opening up new avenues to make even more money hand over fist. Banks operating credit cards are the highest-profit-margin enterprises in the economy. Every company wants a share of the loot, amassed from high fees and low overhead costs.
