It sucks. I want to like this but I simply do not.
Sometimes a friend of yours shows you something they earnestly love & god bless ‘em, it’s one of the worst things you’ve ever heard. You can see the appeal, admire the craftsmanship & empathize with how deeply they’re enjoying themselves while patiently waiting for the whole thing to be over. When it’s all over and they ask “What’d ya think?” you only have the strength to muster a diplomatic “Eh, not my thing.” That’s where I stood on Twin Infinitives in 2017. I listened to it with a group of now-disparate discord friends and truly despised it. However, remembering my time with similarly challenging albums, I reserved judgement for a future day when I’d have more time with the material. Well, it’s 2025 at time of writing, and eight years is enough time to call it. This shit sucks. I hated basically every minute of it. The free form exploration of the soul via improvised noise is a cool concept for a genre, sure, but the stoned ramblings of whoever-the-fuck over disorganized walls of static isn’t how I’d choose to spend an afternoon. I usually reserve the word tuneless for derivative amateur drivel that comes & goes from popular music spheres, but this is the other side of that coin. In throwing out basically all conventions surrounding modern music (song structures, harmonies, melodies, rhythm, lyrics, fucking rehearsals) their explorations recreate a primal ooze through which raw human emotion takes sonic form. This lack of structure makes it, in many ways, literally tuneless. There is no tune here, at least any decipherable one. All of these songs are half-improvised walls of semi-coherent ideas splattered haphazardly on a canvas with little sober cohesion piecing them together. In rejecting the fundamental building blocks of music, they’ve thrown out of the vocabulary that makes it powerful. I can’t lie to myself about how I feel about it. Royal Trux doesn’t remind me of innovators like Picasso or Beethoven. I don’t hear a deep reconstruction of music as we…
