A new one page comic from the world of REEL LIFE.
Panel 1 Galen and Luna at a lemonade stand. A customer eyes the stand. CUSTOMER Aren't you two a little old for a lemonade stand? LUNA It's not a "lemonade stand" per se...it's more of a meta commentary on suburban America. Panel 2 Luna LUNA Do you want it MORE if I tell you we made it ourselves our is that disgusting? Do I look like someone you would buy lemonade from? PANEL 3 Customer LUNA Is buying drinks off the street from a stranger acceptable in our current political environment? Panel 4 Customer walks away. Galen looks at the cup he's holding. LUNA Perhaps we need to rethink our marketing strategy. GALEN I think we forgot to add sugar.

The Battle with Pictures MCed by ‪@breenabard.bsky.social‬ was harrowing, but we prevailed, and the KidLit panel with @oneofthejohns.bsky.social & Robin Robinson was a blast.

Sold a lot of books, saw a lot of friends, and ate a lot of good food. 😺

The Reel Life tour kicks off this coming weekend! I’ll post more details on each soon, but for now a quick roundup of what’s next— June 7th – Portland, OR – I’ll be tabling at BwP Con! at @bookswithpictures and doing a panel with some other rad middle grade cartoonists (deets soon!). June 14th – San Francisco, CA – We’ve got a Reel Life Release Party for Bay Area buds old and new at @silversprocketshop ! Featuring a convo between yours truly and the great @nomikane June 24th – Asheville, NC – I’ll be signing and doing a drawing activity WITH ICE CREAM* as part of an awesome collab between @malapropsbookstore and @hopicecreamnc . *including excellent vegan ice cream June 27th-29th – Philadelphia, PA – I’m tabling in the Artist’s Alley at the @americanlibraryassociation Annual Conference in Philly, and doing a couple other fun events at the con. I’ll announce more events soon, including in Southern California, so watch this space! I truly had NO IDEA what kind of turn out we’d have for the REEL LIFE launch party at and was fully prepared for it to be a handful of friends.

Instead, kids were banging down the door before we started and it ended up standing room only, with about 170 PEOPLE.

Bishop’s Peak Elementary School is not only my alma mater, it’s one of the main settings of REEL LIFE, so it was a great place to do my first book event.
So fun to talk and draw with a couple hundred current students from first through sixth grade!
Thanks to Ms. Kelly for making it all happen!

Do you need photo reference to draw a comic? No.

Can it actually get in the way sometimes? Yes.

Even if you’re going to do it, do you need to go to the actual locations in which the story takes place? Obviously not.

But it’s so darn fun!

Like every 'toonist, I could give you an earful about how comics are NOT like movies.
But REEL LIFE is about kids trying to make sense of their troubles through filmmaking, so I shot these reference photos with an anamorphic lens attachment for my phone.

PAGE 9 Panel 1: Reverse angle from the door of the whole group, as Luna enters the room from the hallway. PAUL Well, I guess Kyle isn’t staying for dinner. Panel 2: Roberta puts her hand on Galen’s shoulder. ROBERTA Sweetie, what was that about? Do I need to kick some butt? GALEN Mom… Panel 3: Luna approaches Roberta, hands clasped “professionally” behind her back. LUNA Just a production snafu, Mrs. Murphy. Nothing to be concerned about. Panel 4: Luna and Galen. He does a “whisper” hand gesture. GALEN What’s a “snafu”? LUNA Like, a…screw up. Panel 1: Galen and Luna. She holds up her Gizmo watch. GALEN Well, do we want to get back to work? LUNA Mm, my mom just texted that she’s on her way. Better pack up. Panel 2: Luna heads back into Galen’s room, and he follows. LUNA (rolling eyes) If I’m not ready when she gets here, it’ll throw off the whole family schedule, and her and dad will have another of their classic arguments. Panel 3: Close on Galen, with packing Luna in the BG. GALEN I guess we couldn’t have finished the shots today anyway… LUNA Maybe not. Panel 4: They flop side by side next to the bed. PANEL 1: Galen turns to face Luna. Kyle reaches for the man and woman figures. LUNA We could use an actual slug. Like, from your mom’s garden? GALEN Oh, that could work! Maybe we don’t even need a miniature! PANEL 2: Galen looks back at Kyle. GALEN What are you doing? PANEL 3: We see that Kyle is tearing up. BIG MAD! KYLE If you think I’m stupid and you don’t need my minatures, I guess I’m just going home. Panel 1: Roberta is chopping vegetables on the kitchen table, while Paul is reading on his iPad. ROBERTA I think I’m gonna do lentil soup tonight. Some feta cheese… PAUL Oo, do we have any of that good bread? Panel 2: Same as Panel 1, maybe a bit closer in, but their attention is turned to our right. GALEN (off panel) I literally never said that! Panel 3: Kyle bursts out of Galen’s room. On the door we see a handmade sign “QUIET PLEASE! FILMING IN PROGRESS!—3 KIDS PRODUCTIONS”. KYLE JUST SHUT UP! Panel 4: Kyle turns to face Galen, while Paul and Roberta sit in the close background.
