It's England, 1930. Jennifer's an ordinary girl riding the bus when a little boy gives her a homemade children's book, entitled The Little Princess. The boy then runs off the bus, and Jennifer gives chase. She winds up alone in the middle of nowhere, next to a seemingly-abandoned orphanage, and the little boy is leading her into a trap. As she explores the house, the blank pages of The Little Princess begin to fill themselves in... You could be forgiven, upon first seeing Rule of Rose, for thinking that it's a new installment in the series that gave us Clock Tower and the recent Haunting Ground. Perhaps you might think it's Clock Tower 4: That's When I Reach For My Revolver. It is not, and you're also a weirdo. Instead, it's a distinctly creepy original game that draws inspiration from folklore and silent movies, with a distinctly dreamlike feel. You spend most of Rule of Rose defending yourself from the machinations of the Aristocrats' Club, a bunch of creepy little children who obey their own strange mythology. and their strange possibly-undead minions. Jennifer can defend herself with weapons ranging from a dessert fork to a revolver, while digging up clues and items with the help of her trusty dog Brown. Rule of Rose is a slow-paced, bizarre game with a phenomenal orchestral soundtrack. If you're patient and willing to put up with severe weirdness, keep your eyes open for this one.

Rule of Rose (PS2) is the tale of a young orphan, her canine companion and the psy chopathic children who stalk them. Filled with unnerving settings and characters, the game starts getting dark when you arrive at a massive English orphanage and find a cadre of children beating a burlap bag with a stick. The game masterfully evokes a drab prewar ambience through its twisted storybook presentation, haunting parlor music, grainy camera filters and generally antique feeling. Chalkboard drawings and tinkling laughter combine with sudden shocks and puzzles (some of which you'll need your dog to solve) to make sure you never trust a seven- year-old again. While Gothically gorgeous, the story unfolds at a drip rather than an arterial spray, so those searching for the next Suffering should look else- where. -Scott Steinberg

Rule of Rose >STYLE 1-PLAYER ACTION PUBLISHER ATLUS > DEVELOPER SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN > RELEASE FALL RAINDROPS ON ROSES AND WHISKERS ON KITTENS The social structures built by packs of little girls are elaborate, and the punishments for not conform- ing are often harsh. But the little debutantes of Rule of Rose, a promising Japanese survival horror adventure that just recently got a U.S. publishing deal, are taking it a step into the macabre. Set in the mid-1930s, Rule of Rose sounds much more like a survival adven- ture than traditional survival horror title. Jennifer, the main playable character, follows a young boy off the bus she is traveling on after he suddenly runs away from her. The stop seems to be in the middle of nowhere, with only a strange manor house nearby. As she approaches, Jennifer is swept into the mystery of the house, the downright creepy little girls outside, and what early reviews of the Japanese version describe as a flying whale. Um, okay... Puzzle solving and appeas- ing the little devil girls is the main order of business, but fighting bad guys doesn't appear to be part of the deal. Combat isn't a focus of the horror title's gameplay, but a stray dog will assist Jennifer by distracting enemies and pointing out hidden items. Unlike Haunting Ground, which also featured a somewhat helpless girl and her pet, players have no interaction or training options with the dog. It appears that the pooch is there simply as a passive aid. The idea of a new creepy franchise based on wits and not weaponry is a promising one. Rule of Rose has the dis- tinctive style and quirky premise to make it a standout in the survival horror arena. Luckily, the only stop between evil and our waiting PS2s is a round of localiza- tion, so the game could be out sooner than we think. Players will have to appease each of the totally creepy girls "Keep your eyes closed, baby, while I kiss you. I promise I am human. And totally hot."

Rule of Rose animated award nominee mystery SOLVED! @kamellia261004.bsky.social managed to give me testimony that the game's CGI cutscenes were considered for an award in two cases: one for the Japanese Media Art Festival and the other for the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
