Mamdani doesn't seem like one to back away from a challenge, but he also knows when to pick his battles. Seeing how he handled the meeting today, I think its very likely that they would try, but not very likely that they'd have gotten near as far as he did

Various news sources are putting way too much emphasis on their roomate being trans like that matters in this context, their roomate had nothing to do with the shooting (as of right now, its said he worked alone)
